On the afternoon of July 9, answering VTC News, Ms. H.D, the MC's mother, said that the family is still in the US and has not dared to return to Vietnam even though they had booked tickets to return since the end of June.
From pass to fail
Ms. H.D added that after her daughter's article was published, it attracted a lot of interested readers.
"Actually, the person who suggested MC take the exam was teacher T. He suggested it when MC was in the middle of 8th grade. At the end of 8th grade, I asked again and teacher T. agreed. In May 2022, MC started studying for the exam but only studied music because she studied composition," said Ms. H.D.
In March, when the results were out, Mr. T. only called Ms. H.D. to inform her that MC had passed the music project. When asked about the writing project, Mr. T. replied that MC had failed.
The next day, when looking at the list published on the contest website, Ms. H.D took a screenshot and sent it to Mr. T.
" When I asked why the list had the registration number 2190, the project name was the same as MC's and the name was also CL (MC's last name is L. - PV), Mr. T. replied that it was an article by a friend from Vinschool. At that time, I knew there was a problem, but I thought about the dozen or so students who were taking the exam. If I did it too big at that time, perhaps none of them would be able to participate ," Ms. H.D confided.
The MC's article with the red circled area was said by the MC's family to have been "stolen".
Ms. H.D. said that MC's music teacher asked her to write a paragraph in Vietnamese, then send it to him so that he could guide her in composing a project for the exam. At the same time, MC also sent it to teacher T.
Regarding the reason why she sent it to Mr. T. even though it was unrelated, Ms. H.D. explained that it was Mr. T. who suggested that MC write about the topic of the gradual disappearance of green areas in Ho Chi Minh City.
However, when Mr. T. received the essay, he suggested that the MC expand the Vietnamese essay into English for the writing project.
Just an apology
Ms. H.Đ confirmed that the family had not received any prior notice from the teacher about replacing the QU card with the MC's registration number. It was not until June 13, when the entire group was in the US, that the teacher told Ms. H.Đ's family that he had only discovered it when he arrived here.
Genius Olympiad is an international competition to promote awareness of environmental issues through projects in Science, Creative Writing, Business, Robotics, Art, Music, and Short Film.
The competition is organized by Rochester Institute of Technology (USA).
"Not only was he silent with his mother, but he also did not reply to my messages. I did not know anything until I went to the US to prepare for the exam, " said the MC.
The MC added that even though she won the silver medal at the award ceremony, the results would be given from bottom to top. When she saw QU coming up to receive the award, the MC felt very sad.
According to the MC, the incident continued to drag on even though the MC and his family only hoped to receive an apology from teacher T. and QU's family. However, they still did not receive it.
"I asked my mother for permission to post it on Facebook. She stopped me from the moment I had the idea, but I was determined to do it. The entire article was written by me with the support of a person named Jenny Hoang on Facebook, who was also the person who supported me throughout the recent Genius Olympiad exam," the MC said.
Message from Mr. T. to Ms. H.D - MC's mother
Ms. H.D said that, in fact, her family only needed an apology from Mr. T. and QU's family. More than half a month has passed, but all that remains is unresolved controversy.
"Up to this point, when the incident is so big, I feel very sorry for MC and QU. However, if QU's family really has a record and wants to sue, our family is ready to follow," said Ms. H.D.
Previously, in response to VTC News, teacher T said that both MC and QU's creative articles had the same title "Saigon - Facing the loss of myself", referring to the issue of Ho Chi Minh City gradually losing urban green areas. Because both MC and QU were accompanied by teacher T, the topic and title of the article were suggested by him. However, the content of the article was completely different.
" When the incident happened, I tried to explain to MC and MC's mother, however, things are going too far. Whether right or wrong, I would like to apologize to both families, especially MC and QU. I hope that both families will stay calm and avoid pushing the matter too far, affecting the psychology of the students, and especially Gia Dinh High School. Currently, I am still waiting for MC and her family to return to the country so that we can meet and discuss more specifically and clearly ," said Mr. T.
Regarding this incident, Ms. TV (QU's mother) said that when the contest ended, her child posted the photo on his personal Facebook, but the MC's family pressured him to remove it.
Affirming that the information on the internet is one-sided, seriously affecting her child's health and spirit, Ms. TV said she has recorded all related articles, messages, comments... to protect her child's honor.
Responding to VTC News, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Khanh Van, Principal of Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) confirmed that she had been aware of the incident since the contest had just ended, on June 17.
" After the competition ended, MC won the silver prize for the music project, QU won the bronze prize for the writing project. However, immediately after that, MC's parents continuously called and pressured me, constantly forcing me to resolve this matter immediately. Because teacher T is a teacher at the school and QU is also a student at the school, I replied to MC's parents that when all the students returned to the country, I would invite all three parties (MC, QU, and teacher NMT) to work ," said Ms. Van.
The principal added that as soon as the scandal broke out, the school asked teacher NMT to report the incident.
