In the lush green space of the mountains and forests of Hon Ba Nature Reserve (Khanh Hoa province), we witnessed with our own eyes the Black-shanked Douc Langur - a rare primate listed in the Vietnam Red Book, swinging from branch to branch; many rare birds listed in the Red Book such as: White-bellied Sandpiper, Hornbill, Burmese Flowerbird, Mountain Kite, Snake-necked Bird...

Hon Ba Nature Reserve (KBTTN) has a total area of over 20,900 hectares spread over 4 districts: Khanh Vinh, Khanh Son, Cam Lam, Dien Khanh of Khanh Hoa province.

Hon Ba Nature Reserve has a diverse and rich wildlife system. Therefore, the management board of this reserve is implementing many solutions to protect wildlife.

Diverse wildlife, rare forest animals listed in the Red Book

Recently, we had the opportunity to follow the rangers of Hon Ba Nature Reserve on a forest patrol, along the route from Suoi Cat commune (Cam Lam district) to the top of Hon Ba.

In the lush green space of the mountains and forests, we witnessed with our own eyes the Black-shanked Douc Langur - a rare primate listed in the Vietnam Red Book - swinging from branch to branch.

In addition, the reserve also has many other rare bird species such as: White-bellied ibis, hornbill, Burmese hawk, mountain hawk, snake-necked bird...

Mr. Luu Van Nong - Deputy Head of the Department of Environmental Education and Forest Environmental Services (Hon Ba Nature Reserve Management Board) said: "Thanks to good management and protection, the ecosystem at Hon Ba Nature Reserve is increasingly developing, preserving diversity, especially the habitat of wild animals is well protected.

In the reserve, there is no longer the rampant hunting and trapping of wild animals as before; the situation of secretly hunting wild animals has decreased by more than 95% compared to about 10 years ago.

This result was achieved thanks to the conservation area's forces effectively implementing propaganda measures, mobilizing people to raise awareness about forest protection and wildlife protection; regularly organizing patrols and protecting forests from the roots.

Thanks to the preservation of the diversity of flora and fauna, many domestic and foreign scientists have come here to survey and research.

According to our research, Hon Ba Nature Reserve has a very high biodiversity. The wildlife and forest animals in Hon Ba Nature Reserve alone have identified 420 species, with 105 families.

Including: 77 species of wild animals, with 25 families; 224 species of wild birds, with 60 families; 71 species of reptiles, with 14 families; 48 species of frogs, with 6 families.

In the reserve, there are also dozens of rare animal species, listed in the Vietnam Red Book and the World Red Book such as: Black-shanked douc langur, yellow-cheeked gibbon, little loris, yellow-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque...

Multiple protection solutions

According to Mr. Nguyen Trieu Duong - Deputy Head of Hon Ba Forest Protection Department, protecting the diversity of wildlife is one of the key tasks of the rangers of Hon Ba Nature Reserve.

Based on the identification of areas in the forest area at risk of being impacted such as: trails of Hon Ba, Da Giang, Tra Dang, Da Trang (Suoi Cat), Suoi Tan routes; Ma O, Chi Chay (Son Trung), Ta Gu (Son Hiep), Ko Lak (Son Binh); ammunition depot, hot spring, Yang Bay (Khanh Phu); Lo Gia (Suoi Tien), Mo Da (Dien Tan) areas..., the rangers of Hon Ba NR have organized 515 patrols, inspections, and forest protection control in the assigned forest area.
Since then, we have detected, prevented, and chased away subjects who illegally entered the forest and hunted wild animals; collected and dismantled a number of animal traps set by subjects in the forest.

In the coming time, Hon Ba Forest Protection Department will continue to patrol and protect natural forests, expel criminals from the forest; at the same time, strengthen propaganda to raise public awareness about forest protection and wildlife protection; coordinate with local authorities to strictly handle violators...

In addition, the Hon Ba Nature Reserve Management Board is piloting the placement of camera traps to collect data on wildlife in the reserve.
Accordingly, since the beginning of January 2022, 4 camera traps have been installed in areas with high biodiversity, in sub-zones 213 and 217 to collect more data on wildlife, improving the opportunity to conserve biodiversity in the forest.
“Over the time of setting camera traps, we have recorded the appearance of species such as: central partridge, yellow weasel; we are continuing to analyze images of some other wild animals.
After testing on a small area in the reserve's forest, the unit will increase the number of camera traps and survey more transects.

Thereby, research, update the animal catalog and establish a distribution map of endemic and endangered species in the conservation area to have effective protection solutions," said Mr. Luu Van Nong.
