On March 18, Chinese media warned that the new round of tariffs taking effect in April 2025 would harm the US economy, leaving open the possibility that Beijing would retaliate.

Specifically, the Global Times said: "Trade partners will not sit idly by with US tariffs, and retaliation by imposing high tariffs on US exports may become an option for many countries."

The newspaper commented: "Many countries are actively seeking to diversify economic partnerships and reduce dependence on the US by establishing new trade alliances."

Just two months after returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump has initiated trade conflicts with China, Canada, Mexico and the European Union (EU).

He threatened that Washington would impose reciprocal tariffs on all countries that tax its imports, with the tariffs likely to take effect from April 2.

In February and March 2025, Beijing quickly took countermeasures when President Trump's two rounds of tariffs took effect.

Specifically, in response to the US's 20% tax on Chinese goods, the world's second largest economy imposed a 10-15% tax on agricultural and food products exported from the US, imposed export and investment restrictions on 25 companies, suspended soybean import licenses of 3 companies, and stopped importing wood from the world's number 1 economy.

In addition, the Northeast Asian country is also investigating some US fiber optic cable products.
