Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son receives Ambassador-Head of EU Delegation Giorgio Aliberti

On the morning of July 6, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son received Ambassador-Head of the EU Delegation Giorgio Aliberti to say goodbye on the occasion of the end of his term of office in Vietnam.

At the reception, Minister Bui Thanh Son congratulated Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti on successfully completing his term of office in Vietnam (2019-2023), highly appreciating the Ambassador's active role and effective contributions to the development of the Vietnam-EU Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation.

In particular, the Minister thanked and appreciated the fact that during the difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam received support in terms of vaccines and medical equipment from the EU and its member countries, contributing to increasing the widespread vaccination coverage rate and early control of Covid-19.

Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam highly values ​​and wishes to promote relations with the European Union - one of Vietnam's leading important partners.

The Minister highly appreciated the role of the EU in promoting the establishment of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) framework between Vietnam and international partners and proposed that the EU continue to support Vietnam in implementing cooperation in this field; continue to urge the parliaments of the remaining member countries to soon ratify and put into effect the Vietnam - EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), contributing to creating a new breakthrough in economic cooperation between the two sides.

The two sides were pleased to see that the Vietnam-EU relationship has developed strongly in the fields of politics-diplomacy, defense-security, science-technology, cyber security, education-training, and climate change response. The two sides agreed to maintain delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially at high levels.

Economically, the implementation of the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) since August 2020 has contributed to making the EU the 5th largest trade partner and investor of Vietnam, two-way trade between Vietnam and the EU has continuously increased; two-way trade turnover in 2022 reached 62.2 billion USD, an increase of 14.2% compared to 2021. The EU is currently the largest ODA donor of Vietnam.

Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti thanked Minister Bui Thanh Son for taking the time to receive him; highly appreciated the achievements in socio-economic development and international integration that Vietnam has achieved in recent times; thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other ministries, branches and localities for supporting the activities of the Delegation and the Ambassador himself during his term of office in Vietnam.

Agreeing with Minister Bui Thanh Son's assessment of the bilateral relationship, Ambassador Aliberti thanked Vietnam for sharing medical supplies with EU countries in the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic; highly appreciated Vietnam's culture of solidarity and international support in difficult times.

Considering Vietnam a pioneer in the region in green transition and clean energy transition, Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti affirmed that the EU will strengthen the implementation of cooperation policies with the region and JETP between Vietnam and partner countries of which the EU is the coordinator.

The EU attaches importance to developing relations with Vietnam on the basis of trustworthy political relations, extensive economic cooperation and rich cooperation potential, especially in new fields and development trends of the world such as clean energy transition, green transition, etc., contributing to the implementation of sustainable development goals.

The Ambassador said that Vietnam has made great efforts to have EVFTA with the EU - a foundation to promote bilateral cooperation; and said that the EU has also sent a message recommending that member countries soon ratify EVIPA to promote multi-faceted relations between the two sides. The Ambassador also proposed that the two sides soon develop a plan to mobilize resources to implement JETP to facilitate the expansion of investment, business, and sustainable development cooperation...

The Ambassador affirmed that in his new position, he will continue to contribute to consolidating and further strengthening the comprehensive partnership and cooperation between Vietnam and the EU and will always have good feelings for Vietnam.
