On the afternoon of July 18, in Ben Tre, the working delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development led by Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien had a working session with the Standing Committee of Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee on the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the province.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Buoi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre province, from 2022, the province will strengthen inspection, control, and handling of violations against fishing vessels violating IUU fishing at fishing ports and in sea areas; not allowing fishing vessels to unload exploited aquatic products at illegal landing points.
As a result, 345 ships lost connection for 3 days or more; 14 ships lost connection for 10 days or more; and 10 administrative fines were issued to ship owners totaling over 307 million VND for violating the monitoring signal loss for over 10 days. 4 ships that illegally exploited the border were fined, with a total fine of 153 million VND. The cases that have not been handled are because the captain (the violator) has not returned to the locality. "Since the beginning of the year, Ben Tre has not had any fishing vessels detained or handled by foreign countries," Mr. Buoi emphasized.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that Ben Tre has great potential for fisheries but the province's anti-IUU work has not changed in many aspects, and solutions are needed in the coming time. The Deputy Minister suggested that Ben Tre must strengthen strict management of fishing fleets, especially those at high risk of violating foreign waters. On the other hand, the fishing work of the vessels must be on the right route. In particular, it is necessary to promote the responsibility of local leaders in anti-IUU work in the context of Directive 32 of the Secretariat. "Ben Tre will soon have solutions to overcome the shortcomings and limitations so that the province's anti-IUU work in the coming time will change more positively, in order to contribute to the whole country's determination to remove the IUU yellow card warning in September", Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien expected.
It is known that the whole province of Ben Tre has 2,084/2,373 inspected vessels, reaching 87.82%; 289 uninspected vessels. Licensed vessels are 2,432/3,026, reaching 80.37%; 594 unlicensed vessels. Particularly, fishing vessels under the "3 no" category (not registered, not inspected, not licensed) have registered 263, reaching 23.54%. The province has 2,006/2,034 fishing vessels subject to mandatory installation of monitoring equipment, reaching 98.62%, of which 28 vessels have not installed monitoring equipment.
