The news that Vietnam and the US have upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has been published by many international news agencies, stating that the relationship between the two countries is increasingly deep.

"The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam is a major upgrade in relations for the US, the result of the tireless efforts of the two countries," BBC commented on the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US for peace, cooperation and sustainable development during President Joe Biden's state visit on September 10.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong highly appreciated President Biden's visit to Vietnam, as well as the two countries' upgrading of relations to a new height. In a post on social network X the same day, President Biden emphasized the "historic visit", adding that Vietnam and the US "have a great opportunity to become very important partners".

The BBC also quoted Jake Sullivan, White House national security adviser, saying before Mr Biden 's visit that Vietnam has a "leading role in the growing network of US partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region" that the US is aiming for.

The Los Angeles Times said the upgrade to the highest level of relations between Vietnam and the US is proof that "this relationship has come a long way from what Mr. Biden once called 'the bitter past'".

"The upgrade of US-Vietnam relations is of great significance given the complicated history between the two sides," said Jeremy Diamond and Kevin Liptak, two commentators for CNN .

During yesterday's talks, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong pointed out that the Vietnam-US relationship has "experienced many ups and downs, especially the longest and fiercest war in the 20th century after World War II". However, the relationship between the two countries has developed strongly, deeply, substantially and effectively since the two countries normalized in 1995, especially after establishing a Comprehensive Partnership in 2013.

"We have gone from conflict to normalization and now we are upgrading our relationship to promote security and prosperity in one of the most important regions of the world," President Biden said during the talks.

Since establishing the Comprehensive Partnership in July 2013, the two sides have strengthened cooperation in all areas, from politics - diplomacy, economics, education, to science - technology, defense - security.

Vietnam-US trade will reach more than 123.86 billion USD in 2022, an increase of 11% compared to 2021. The US is Vietnam's largest export market and second largest trading partner, while Vietnam is the US's 7th largest trading partner in the world and the largest in ASEAN.

The Wall Street Journal quoted Erin Murpy, senior fellow of the Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), as saying that the upgrade to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership shows that the relationship between Vietnam and the US "continues to warm".

The Washington Post commented that President Biden is "bringing the United States closer to Vietnam than ever before, with the announcement of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that will bring the two countries closer diplomatically."

Many other newspapers and news sites in the region such as China, Australia, Japan, and Indonesia also reported on the event.

Indonesia's Kompas newspaper published an article titled "New chapter of Vietnam-US relations", in which it stated that "Vietnam and the US have begun a new era in bilateral relations, rising to become Comprehensive Strategic Partners".

Macau Daily Times, one of two English-language newspapers in Macau, China, reported the event and quoted Jon Finer, deputy national security adviser to the White House, as saying that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is the highest level in Vietnam's foreign relations. "It is very meaningful, showing the depth and scope of cooperation in the relationship," Finer said.

Russia's Sputnik news agency quoted Professor Anna Malindog-Uy, vice president of the Asian Century Strategic Studies Institute in Manila, Philippines, as saying that Vietnam plays an important role in US foreign policy for political, economic and geopolitical reasons, including its strategic geographical location.

Vietnam has now established Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships with five major countries in the world, including China, Russia, India, South Korea and the United States.
