According to The Metro, artificial intelligence (AI) cameras will be installed on British motorways in the coming weeks. This effort is aimed at "catching" drivers littering on the road. Violators will be fined up to £100 (2.96 million VND).

The initiative is part of a pilot programme by Highways National, the agency set up to maintain and upgrade roads, and will work with East Hampshire County Council.

The cameras automatically send images to law enforcement, meaning officers no longer have to sit and watch CCTV for hours looking for offenders. The system will initially be deployed in south-east England, according to the Telegraph.

The problem of littering on the highways is becoming increasingly worrying. In February, campaign group Clean Up Britain said it would pursue legal action against the National Highways Authority if the situation did not improve. Founder John Read said the AI camera approach sounded good but did not deliver results.

AI cameras are being used to monitor other aspects of driving. In February, for example, an Amazon driver shared that the company uses an AI camera system to monitor them during delivery shifts. The system includes a front-facing camera, two cameras on each side of the vehicle, and a camera in the cab, facing the driver. It reports on the driver’s every move, from drinking coffee to not wearing a seat belt enough times. One driver was once ticketed for touching his beard, but the system mistook him for holding his phone close to his face.
