In an exclusive interview with VTC News, the captain of the Vietnamese team confided about her life in Portugal. Huynh Nhu is the Vietnamese player who has made the biggest impression while playing abroad.
- During the SEA Games, did Huynh Nhu contact her teammates at Lank FC?
I still talk to my teammates regularly, we have a private chat group. Every time I score a goal, my teammates always text me to congratulate me and send me a video of the goal. I am really happy and pleased, my teammates care about me and I appreciate this. I was given the opportunity to compete in the 32nd SEA Games and I promised to play well so that everyone would not be disappointed.
My “siu” celebration is a funny story. My teammates in Portugal texted me to celebrate like this. During training sessions, if my teammates score, they will shout “siu” very loudly.
Huynh Nhu scored 3 goals for the Vietnamese team on the journey to win the 32nd SEA Games gold medal.
- Fans are curious about how Huynh Nhu lives in Portugal. Besides the time and training and competing, how do you enjoy life there?
I spend time training myself, working out and going to the gym. If I have 1-2 days off, I usually visit the Vietnamese community in Portugal. I want to exchange cultures and also have the opportunity to speak Vietnamese, I really like this.
When I have free time or feel a little sad, I go to the Vietnamese restaurant in Portugal, there is only one restaurant. I go there so many times, now whenever there is something delicious, my family always calls me, this helps me not to miss home. My brother and sister always love and care for me. I invited them to my house to eat coconut wax.
- In addition to making efforts in training and competition, Huynh Nhu is also very active in introducing Vietnamese culture to teammates and friends at Lank.
I think they don’t know much about Vietnam. When I went to Portugal, I had the opportunity to promote my country’s culture to my friends. When I returned to Vietnam and came back, I brought my scarf and ao dai, and I borrowed my conical hat.
I wanted to take lots of pictures for myself. My teammates were very excited and wanted to wear the ao dai. Unfortunately, my ao dai was too small, and my teammates couldn’t fit it, only a few of them could.

- It seems that Huynh Nhu integrates very well with her teammates. How did you prepare for foreign languages?
Here, people still communicate mainly in English because there are many foreign players. I took many English courses online for several years, but the actual communication is completely different. At first, when I first arrived, I couldn't understand what my teammates said. Now I understand better, or if there is something I don't understand, my teammates will speak more slowly.
I often go to my friends' houses to play and cook for my teammates. I'm also lucky to know how to cook a little bit, so thanks to that, everyone is closer. I often make spring rolls, which is the simplest dish. When I make spring rolls, everyone often makes desserts. I always say that I'm also the owner of a coconut shop, if anyone comes to Vietnam to play, they will be invited to eat coconut freely.
Huynh Nhu answered an interview with VTC News after the final match of SEA Games 32.
- What was the most difficult moment for you during nearly a year away from your family and hometown?
The hardest time was when I first came to Portugal, I had very few opportunities to play, I was alone and very sad. I received encouragement from my family and fans in Vietnam.
When I first came here, I always had to go alone and I was not allowed to play on the field, so I thought maybe I would fail again. However, I did not give up and tried hard to practice. When I finished practicing, I went to the gym more, my life was just practice, eat and practice again.

- After a period of competing in Europe, what changes do you feel in yourself when returning to the SEA Games arena?
When I played in Europe, I still felt more confident when I returned to the SEA Games arena. I was confident in my ability to control the ball, there are many differences here compared to Europe. However, Vietnamese and Southeast Asian women's football is still developing. I think there will be many more players who will have the opportunity to go abroad.
- Thank you Huynh Nhu for the story in Portugal and wish you continued success.
