Of the 135 first prizes for excellent 9th grade students in Hanoi, students from the secondary school of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted (Ams2) won 29 prizes, almost all of them in many subjects.
According to the decision announced yesterday by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the whole city has nearly 2,600 students winning prizes, including 135 first prizes, 544 second prizes, 790 third prizes and 1,126 consolation prizes.
The secondary school system of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted has an overwhelming achievement. Of the 121 students participating in 10 subjects (except Civic Education, French, Japanese), 118 students won prizes, equivalent to 98%.
The total number of awards of Ams students alone is equal to and higher than 25 other districts of Hanoi, only less than Cau Giay, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem.
In terms of first prizes alone, Ams2 students account for 1/5 of the total prizes in the city. In Math, Hanoi has 10 first prizes, Ams2 has 7 prizes. Similarly, in Physics and English, this school has 4/10 and 6/13 first prizes, respectively.
Literature and History are two subjects in which Ams2 students did not have first prizes.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training will issue certificates to students who win prizes. They will receive 2-5 points in the preliminary round if they register for the 10th grade specialized exam under the Department. However, this point is not valid when calculating the admission score and standard score.
Students who win first prize will be directly admitted to some specialized high schools affiliated with universities, such as Pedagogy and Natural Sciences.

In recent days, the news that Ams2 might stop enrolling has received the attention of parents in Hanoi. This is a famous secondary school, which only accepts 200 students each year, with 3,000-5,000 applications. Students must score 10 in almost all subjects to be able to take the entrance exam. Meanwhile, most public secondary schools in Hanoi recruit students based on their residential area.
In an official dispatch sent to Hanoi a few days ago, the Ministry of Education and Training requested the city to direct the enrollment of students into specialized high schools in accordance with regulations. According to the 2019 Education Law, specialized schools can only be established at the high school level, and there are no middle schools within specialized schools.
On March 7, Director of the Department of Secondary Education Nguyen Xuan Thanh confirmed that non-specialized secondary school classes in specialized schools must stop enrolling students.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training said it will propose a plan to maintain stable enrollment in grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam Specialized School in the 2024-2025 school year. In addition, to prevent this system from operating illegally, the Department will advise the city to request a special mechanism.
According to a survey conducted by VnExpress on March 6, 61% of more than 4,300 respondents said that enrollment at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted should be maintained.
