What is the ranking method?
According to QS, this is the 15th year of publishing the World University Rankings by Subject, with 1,758 educational institutions ranked from more than 100 countries and territories, including 171 new names. A total of more than 21,000 training programs of the schools were compared with each other. From here, QS will rank the schools based on 5 subject groups and then continue to rank based on 55 subjects.
According to QS, based on its specificity, each industry will have a different approach to determining the criteria and corresponding weights. In total, there are 5 criteria used for ranking: academic reputation, reputation with employers, research citations per scientific article, H-index (used to measure the productivity and influence of a researcher), and international research network index (IRN Index) published by QS itself.
From the ranking results, Mr. Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS, commented that the higher education systems in developed countries are facing increasing challenges in terms of funding. "Our rankings by subject group show that emerging markets, especially in Asia and the Middle East, are rising, while financial pressures are increasing for universities in the US, UK, Australia and Canada," Mr. Sowter shared.
This year, the US leads the rankings by subject group with 3,245 subjects ranked, of which the country also ranks first in 32 out of 55. The UK ranks second, with 1,883 subjects ranked and ranks first in 18. China leads in the number of newly ranked subjects, of which 7 out of the 10 best-improved universities in the world are from this country.
QS is one of the three most prestigious, experienced and influential university ranking organizations in the world, along with the Times Higher Education (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). QS began ranking universities in 2004, one year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
