Actively introducing high-economic efficiency crops and livestock into production is the method being implemented by farmers in Yen Dong commune (Yen Mo). In particular, the model of raising catfish initially brought high economic efficiency, opening up a direction for economic development for the people here.

As one of the pioneering households to raise catfish on an area of nearly 5 sao in recent times, Mr. Pham Xuan Vinh in Dan Moi hamlet, Yen Dong commune is raising nearly 20,000 catfish. Mr. Vinh said that in the past, on an area of 5 sao, his family mainly raised traditional grass carp, so the economic efficiency was not high. Through research, Mr. Vinh found that catfish are quite easy to raise, low investment costs, short raising time, and high economic efficiency. In early 2023, he decided to buy fry to raise, and so far the fish have developed very well.

Catfish is a type of fish that is less susceptible to disease, grows quickly and can be stocked at high density, on average about 30 fish can be stocked per 1m2. It takes about 4 months to be able to sell and the fish reach a weight of nearly 250 grams/fish.

According to Mr. Vinh, for raising catfish, the water must be changed every 15-20 days, the pond bottom must be disinfected, and a clean water source must be ensured for the fish to grow healthily. At this time, his family is taking good care of the fish so that they can grow healthily, ensuring sufficient supply to serve the market at the end of the year. With a selling price of 55,000 VND/kg, a crop of 20,000 fish will yield 1 ton of fish. On average, 3 crops can be harvested per year, 2-3 times higher than traditional fish farming. With an area of 5 sao of fish, 3 crops per year, after deducting costs, the profit is nearly 100 million VND. In particular, all the harvested output is purchased by traders at home. In the coming time, Mr. Vinh's family will continue to expand the farming area because this is a high-value fish that does not require much care.

The family of Mr. Lai Duy Ngo (Hoang Tien village) is also one of the households developing a model of raising wild catfish. Mr. Ngo said that since the Commune Farmers' Association signed a contract with a unit in Hai Duong to import breeds as well as purchase all output products for the people, he and some households in the commune have raised wild catfish. During the raising process, he and other households were instructed on care techniques to ensure the catfish grow healthily. In addition, he also visited some real models and learned knowledge online to apply to the raising process at home. Therefore, his family's fish area has grown healthily.

Yen Dong is a mountainous commune of Yen Mo district, with a large area, especially a very large water surface area. Taking advantage of that, in recent times, the commune has converted 215 hectares of ineffective rice-growing land to aquaculture combined with rice cultivation. Currently, in the commune, there are 10 households boldly raising catfish on an area of 10 hectares. This is a new breed, a specialty that is being strongly consumed by the market. The households are actively caring for and controlling diseases, and are expected to be able to supply more than 5 tons of fish during the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024.

Mr. Le Sy Son, Vice Chairman of Yen Dong Commune People's Committee, said: In recent years, catfish has had a high and stable economic value. However, the natural resources of catfish are increasingly depleted. Therefore, the commune always creates favorable conditions for households who want to convert their area to catfish farming to increase income and stabilize their lives.

Converting the breeding objects to suit the actual conditions is an effective solution to bring high economic efficiency, especially for households without capital and small pond areas like Yen Dong. The success of the fish farming model in the field is the basis for the commune to continue to replicate and popularize it to intensive fish farming households in the area, moving towards expanding the catfish farming area, bringing large income and stable output for farmers here.
