The success of the closed pig farming model has helped veteran Nguyen Viet Phuc (born in 1964), living in Lam Thuy village, Hai Hung commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province, become one of the typical examples of good economic performance, and his teammates and local people often come to learn from his experience. For Mr. Phuc, whether in wartime or peacetime, having the health to contribute to his homeland is the greatest happiness.

“In recent years, the movement of war veterans doing good business in Hai Hung commune, Hai Lang district has developed very vigorously. Among them, the outstanding example is war veteran Nguyen Viet Phuc with his closed pig farming model,” said Mr. Cap Hong Ngoc, Chairman of the War Veterans Association of Hai Hung commune. Mr. Phuc is currently the owner of a 330 m2 pig farm, bringing his family hundreds of millions of VND in income each year. Not only is he good at business, he is also a sociable person, willing to share experiences with his teammates and local people; actively participating in activities and movements launched by the War Veterans Association at all levels.

Following the instructions of the locals, we went to Mr. Phuc’s farm in Lam Thuy village, Hai Hung commune. To be able to work, we had to undergo extremely strict disinfection steps. Early in the morning, Mr. Phuc cleaned the barn before restarting the automatic feeding system for the pigs.

This has been his familiar job for more than 3 years now. On an area of 330 m2 far from residential areas, rented by the locality, his family invested in building a closed-loop pig farm. Currently, the farm has a total of 18 pens with 20 pigs/pen, divided into different stages of raising and 30 sows for breeding the farm's pigs.

The farming here is done in a closed system, the stages of feeding and watering pigs are all handled automatically. All activities in the farm are monitored via cameras. “Large-scale pig farming requires high technology and many factors. The barn must be protected and regularly disinfected, pigs must be regularly vaccinated, and pigs must be monitored and promptly detected when they show unusual changes.

The farm opened successfully thanks in part to the technical support from my son - a graduate of the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University. Therefore, my family's pig farm safely overcame the epidemics. Currently, the pig farm is supplying pork to the market from Nghe An to Hue City, bringing the family an income of 300 million VND/year", Mr. Phuc introduced.

Looking at the achievements today, few people know that this veteran had overcome many difficulties in the past. In 1987, after returning to his homeland after 2 years of fighting in the Laos battlefield, Mr. Phuc started his career as a carpenter. With the hands of a skilled craftsman, he created many products such as: tables, chairs, beds, cabinets and daily necessities, which were favored by consumers.

Then, to earn more income to support their children’s education, the couple switched to farming 6 hectares of rice fields. In 2014, feeling that he was no longer healthy enough to work all day, Mr. Phuc began to learn how to raise animals and stuck with pig farming from there. “The first batch of pigs I raised was about 30.

At that time, I lacked both capital and experience, so the results were not as expected. But I did not see the difficulty and backed out. I gathered all the capital in the house, borrowed more from relatives and banks to invest in raising the next batch of pigs. Day by day, I took care of the pigs, gradually researching and gaining experience in raising pigs. Over time, the pigs grew up healthy and helped my family gradually overcome difficulties; my children had enough money to study," Mr. Phuc recalled.

Not only developing the economy, Mr. Phuc is also considered an active and enthusiastic member in activities and movements organized by the Veterans Association at all levels. Especially in the movement of Veterans helping each other in economic development, he does not hesitate to guide and help members who need and want to learn about livestock farming experience.

That is the reason why he always receives the love and trust of his comrades and people in the area. Mr. Phuc himself is always proud because in wartime or peacetime, he has contributed his efforts, no matter how small, to protect and build his homeland.

Sharing with us about his future plans, Mr. Phuc said that he will invest more in facilities to modernize barns and expand the scale of livestock farming to develop the herd. We believe that with the spirit of a soldier, this veteran will continue to overcome all challenges to soon complete his good plans.
