The province's shrimp seed production industry was established in the 1990s, initially starting from a number of small production facilities in Phan Thiet City and Vinh Hao and Vinh Tan communes - Tuy Phong district with the main production object being black tiger shrimp. After nearly 35 years of development, the province now has 128 facilities/764 aquaculture production and breeding farms with the main production object being white-leg shrimp, a few facilities producing black tiger shrimp, snails, and sea crabs, including more than 50 companies with domestic investment capital and 2 companies with foreign investment capital. Large-scale production companies in the province include: Vietnam High-Tech Aquaculture Company Limited - Binh Thuan Branch (formerly CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company), Viet Uc Aquaculture Joint Stock Company, Nam Mien Trung DTTS Company Limited, Truong Thinh Company Limited... Recently, the commercial shrimp farming market has encountered many difficulties, but preparing to enter the new season, customers from the provinces of the Southwest to the North Central region still flock to shrimp hatcheries in Binh Thuan to wait to buy seeds to release. Thereby, it shows that the Binh Thuan shrimp seed brand has been "famous" for many years.
According to the provincial Department of Fisheries, with a coastline of 192 km, little rain, and a stable salinity of 34% all year round, the province has great potential and advantages for brackish water seed production, especially shrimp seed. Not only that, Binh Thuan is one of the five rare regions in the world with a high nutrient upwelling area, stable salinity, and no fresh water from rivers flowing into the sea, so it is rich in minerals. In addition, the farming area here has many coral reefs that filter seawater. Clean water is an important factor for successful shrimp farming. In particular, when the finished shrimp are raised, they will have a beautiful color, taste, and sweetness compared to shrimp raised in other provinces and cities. That is why large shrimp farming areas in the Western provinces still come to Binh Thuan to buy shrimp seed, even though these provinces still have businesses supplying seeds.
Application of modern technology
With the above convincing reasons, over time, the capacity and scale of hatcheries have also continuously increased due to businesses and shrimp seed production facilities focusing on upgrading and applying advanced scientific techniques. Many hatcheries in the province are large-scale, investing in modern equipment, meeting international quality standards in shrimp seed production. In particular, Viet-Uc Group is the first enterprise to successfully select and create high-quality white-leg shrimp parent breeds recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as new breeds, making an important contribution to the overall development of the Vietnamese shrimp industry after 5 years of dedicated research. Mr. Le Thanh Son - Vice President of Binh Thuan Shrimp Association said: "Regarding the source of parent shrimp, Viet Uc Seafood Joint Stock Company is a pioneer that has succeeded in researching and self-producing parent shrimp, with traceable origin, breeds with high survival rate, good resistance and adaptability to local soil conditions, no longer dependent on imported sources such as the US, Thailand, Singapore... Self-sufficiency in parent shrimp further affirms the advantage of shrimp seed production of the province in the South Central region and the whole country".
At the same time, many large enterprises in the province have invested in high technology in shrimp seed production to improve productivity and quality of shrimp seeds such as: Technology for diagnosing aquatic diseases using the RT-PCR method, technology for treating input water for production, technology for cultivating fresh algae as food for shrimp larvae, technology for raising and reducing water temperature in shrimp larval rearing. Recently, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province, Binh Thuan Shrimp Association has coordinated with the Institute for Training and Research on Applied Aquaculture Technology - SABIO to put into operation a branch of Shrimp Disease Testing in Vinh Hao commune - Tuy Phong district. This is the first time that businesses and shrimp farmers in the province have had access to one of the most modern shrimp disease testing equipment available today.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh - Chairman of Binh Thuan Shrimp Association said: "Binh Thuan is a place that supplies shrimp seeds with a large output in the whole country. Recently, shrimp farmers in the province are facing a situation of releasing seeds but dying in large numbers, causing heavy losses for farmers in particular and affecting the shrimp industry in general. Binh Thuan's pioneering application of Real-time PCR testing machines will help farmers identify new strains of bacteria in aquatic products, thereby providing timely treatment solutions when an epidemic occurs, helping farmers minimize risks when releasing seeds".
In addition, in the near future, Binh Thuan shrimp products will be protected under the form of geographical indications, which will create a premise for better management of shrimp product quality, creating opportunities for organizations and individuals raising and trading shrimp in the province to benefit more from the brand value of Binh Thuan shrimp. In addition, Binh Thuan is a province with great potential for tourism, combined with the fact that Binh Thuan shrimp products are protected under the form of geographical indications, not only creating a reputation, enhancing the value of shrimp products, but also attracting investment and promoting the development of tourism services for the province.
Chi Cong concentrated aquaculture seed production area comes into operation, Binh Thuan will become the center of high quality shrimp seed of the country is no longer a distant story.
In the new trend of the shrimp industry, to stabilize and maintain shrimp seed production activities in the province, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development hopes that shrimp seed production facilities will cooperate and link production chains to reduce intermediaries and reduce shrimp seed production costs; apply high technology and new technology in shrimp seed production to improve quality. In addition, the agricultural sector will continue to remove difficulties and attract enterprises with technological and financial potential to invest in the Chi Cong concentrated aquatic seed production area (phase 1). Up to now, 5 enterprises have been notified by the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to approve land locations according to the plot division diagram to carry out investment procedures and establish investment projects for high-tech shrimp seed production. When this place is formed and put into operation, Binh Thuan will become the center of high-quality shrimp seeds in the country, which is no longer a distant story.
