In 2023, although according to data from the functional sector, shrimp seed output reached 25.5 billion/plan 25.5 billion post (100% of the plan), approximately equal to the same period. However, shrimp seed production facilities in the province assessed that the situation of shrimp seed consumption this year faced many difficulties, due to the impact of falling shrimp prices in the world and domestic markets, and reduced consumption and export levels.
Polluted farming environment
Binh Thuan shrimp larvae are concentrated in Vinh Tan commune - Tuy Phong district and are considered to be of high quality and supplied to the national market. The whole province has 147 facilities/785 farms/12,100 nursery tanks. Vinh Tan sea area has little fresh water from rivers flowing into the sea, so it has stable salinity all year round, rich in minerals, and physical and chemical factors that are very suitable for shrimp larvae farming. In particular, this area has deep abysses and many coral reefs that filter seawater, which few places in the country have. However, recently, shrimp larvae production has encountered many difficulties. The water environment has directly affected the shrimp larvae production activities of many facilities when the coastal seawater in Vinh Tan commune is often turbid, mud appears in settling ponds when facilities take water for production, affecting the reproductive ability of parent shrimp and the development of shrimp larvae.
In addition, the price of commercial shrimp has decreased while the price of input materials has increased, and the farming environment is polluted, so farmers are very cautious, causing the farming area to gradually shrink. Some other households have switched from shrimp farming to raising snails and sea bass. Although the province has many shrimp breeding businesses, the number of qualified investment facilities is still too small. Meanwhile, the problem of planning shrimp breeding areas is still unfinished, causing this valuable product to be at risk of being overwhelmed by imported shrimp breeding products that are trying to massively penetrate the market.
In recent times, the Department of Fisheries has strengthened the management of the shelf life of broodstock and the inspection and maintenance of conditions for aquaculture production and breeding facilities according to regulations. In addition, many large shrimp breeding enterprises in the province have invested in applying high science and technology to shrimp breeding to improve productivity and quality of shrimp breeding such as: technology for diagnosing aquatic diseases using the RT-PCR method, technology for treating input water for production, technology for cultivating fresh algae as food for shrimp larvae, technology for raising and reducing water temperature in shrimp larval rearing.
Technology investment
Mr. Le Thanh Son - Vice President of Binh Thuan Shrimp Association said: "To maintain and expand the consumption market, most establishments and enterprises in the province are very interested in investing in technology to produce high-quality, disease-resistant shrimp seeds without using antibiotics. Regarding the source of parent shrimp, Viet Uc Seafood Joint Stock Company is a pioneer in successfully researching and producing parent shrimp seeds, with traceable origin, high survival rate, resistance and good adaptation to local soil conditions, no longer dependent on imported sources such as the US, Thailand, Singapore...".
In addition, in the near future, Binh Thuan shrimp products will be protected under the form of geographical indications, which will create the premise for better management of shrimp product quality, contributing to expanding the production area, creating opportunities for organizations and individuals raising and trading shrimp in Binh Thuan province to benefit more from the brand value of Binh Thuan shrimp. In addition, Binh Thuan is a province with great potential for tourism, combined with the fact that Binh Thuan shrimp products are protected under the form of geographical indications, not only creating a reputation, enhancing the value of shrimp products, but also attracting investment and promoting the development of tourism services for Binh Thuan.
Currently, in the province, there are 2 commercial white-leg shrimp farming facilities certified for Global Gap, Bap and ASC with a total farming area of 121 hectares. The Department of Fisheries has received dossiers and issued certificates of aquaculture registration for 32 cage aquaculture facilities and 25 facilities registering the main farming species (white-leg shrimp) according to regulations. In addition, the agricultural sector continues to remove difficulties, attracting enterprises with potential technology and finance to invest in the Chi Cong concentrated aquatic seed production area (phase 1). Up to now, 5 enterprises have been notified by the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to approve the land location according to the plot division diagram to carry out investment procedures, establish investment projects for high-tech shrimp seed production (the area of 5 enterprises establishing projects is 37 hectares/69 hectares of total commercial land area); In which, CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company has been approved by the Provincial People's Committee to invest with a total investment capital of 460 billion VND, Nam Trung Bo Shrimp Seed Production Company Limited has appraised the project to meet the criteria of applying high technology, with an investment capital of 120 billion VND.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has advised the Provincial People's Committee to request the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to guide the implementation of regulations and policies on land for enterprises leasing land to invest in shrimp seed production at the Chi Cong Concentrated Aquatic Seed Production Area. However, up to now, due to problems with land allocation procedures, these two companies have not been able to build shrimp seed farms.
