England and Australia have become the next two names to enter the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women's World Cup after both winning the round of 16 matches that took place on the afternoon of August 7.
The England women's team (ranked 4th in the world) was rated much higher but had to struggle to win against the Nigeria women's team, ranked 40th in the world.
The reigning European champions beat the African side 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the two teams drew 0-0 after 120 minutes.
This victory helps the England Women's Team to reach the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup for the 6th time in history and the 5th consecutive time.
In the last two World Cups, the England Women's Team performed brilliantly to reach the semi-finals but lost to Japan (in 2015) and the USA (2019).
Going straight to the quarterfinals, the next opponent of Coach Sarina Wiegman and her team will be the winner of the match between Colombia and Jamaica.
Meanwhile, the defeat in this match prevented Nigeria from reaching the quarter-finals for the second time in history, after the miracle in 1999 (the tournament at that time only had 16 participating teams).
In the match that just ended, the England team, despite being highly rated, encountered countless difficulties against the world's 40th ranked opponent. They even had to rely on luck to avoid conceding a goal in the first half when Plumptre's shot hit the crossbar.
In the second half, the European representative proactively increased the pressure but continued to be stuck in finding a way into goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie's goal.
Having difficulty attacking, the England women's team also had to play with one less player after Lauren James received a red card in the 87th minute.
After losing a man, Coach Wiegman's students proactively played low and dragged the match to extra time and then penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, England played with more courage to win 4-2, thereby registering their name in the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Cup.
Along with the England Women's Team, the Australian Women's Team also won a ticket to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women's World Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Denmark Team.
Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso both scored to complete the joy for the co-hosts.

This result helps the Australian Women's Team have the honor of entering the round of 8 best teams for the fourth time in history, as well as aiming to change "destiny."
In the previous three times, the Australian Women's Team had to stop at the quarter-finals after losing to Brazil (in 2007), Sweden (in 2011) and Japan (2015).
In the quarter-finals, the Australian women's team will face the winner of the France-Morocco match.
