From master's valedictorian to 5 billion VND doctoral scholarship
In 2019, Huy Hoang graduated with honors in English Pedagogy (Ho Chi Minh City University of Education). In 2022, he enrolled in a master's program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) in Australia and excelled as the valedictorian. At the same time, Hoang was also the student with the highest thesis score in the course (89/100).
During his master's degree, Huy Hoang always tried to learn a lot of knowledge from teachers and colleagues, actively participated in many academic activities and skill supplementary classes. To achieve the desired results, he said: "Throughout the learning process, I always put myself in a proactive position when enthusiastically participating in contributing ideas, always setting clear goals and having an action plan to achieve my goals."
In the 9 months after graduating with a master's degree, in parallel with his teaching job at the University of Economics and Finance (HCMC), Huy Hoang spent day and night preparing his application for a doctoral scholarship.
In May 2023, he officially won a full PhD scholarship from Monash University (Australia) with a research proposal on the personal identity of English language teachers. This is a highly competitive scholarship with a scholarship value of up to 5 billion VND for 4 years of study, of which tuition fees are supported at about 583 million VND/year and living expenses are 533 million VND/year. Monash University is considered to be the top 1 school in Australia and top 14 in the world in education.
"I cried a lot when I received the news. Since graduating with my master's degree, I have spent day and night preparing my application. Studying for a PhD and being accepted into Monash University has always been my dream," Huy Hoang shared.
According to Huy Hoang, to have an impressive scholarship application, students need to carefully read and understand the scholarship information, ensuring that they fully meet the requirements and conditions to register for the doctoral program of the school they want to study. At the same time, preparing good academic results and research achievements are important factors to increase the probability of receiving the scholarship. In addition, the research proposal must also be carefully crafted and ensure important elements in scientific research.
Passion for scientific research
In addition to his passion for foreign languages, Huy Hoang also loves scientific research. He studies Vietnamese teachers’ perceptions of silence in online English classes, through a theoretical framework of student engagement in online classrooms. In addition, he is also a research assistant for an associate professor’s project.
According to Hoang, to achieve success in the research field, graduate students need to be responsible and passionate about their own research direction. In addition, graduate students must have extensive experience and knowledge in the field of research.
"Another secret to becoming a researcher is to be focused and careful when reading and studying documents. Researchers also need to ask the right questions to find out the problem to research and have a solid understanding of that field," Hoang shared.
In August, Huy Hoang will go to Australia to begin his four-year study journey. In the future, he hopes to create an online platform to help teachers who have little opportunity to participate in scientific research to exchange and learn from each other.
As a classmate of Hoang in the master's program, TESOL master Le Do Quyen (32 years old, living in Hanoi) was impressed and admired his persistent efforts in his journey to conquer the goal of studying for a doctorate.
Regarding Huy Hoang's achievement of a full PhD scholarship from Monash University, Ms. Quyen commented: "This is inevitable, because throughout the time I have been with Hoang, I have seen his seriousness in both academics and practice. He always initiates discussions about subjects, professional documents, and is also very open to accepting different perspectives. Hoang is passionate about research and has very new and youthful approaches, but is also meticulous and highly applicable."
