Free tutoring sessions in elementary schools

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên13/03/2025

Before Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning of the Ministry of Education and Training, there were free tutoring sessions in many primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City, helping students study better.

Teachers said that with the 2018 General Education Program, primary school students study 2 sessions/day, but not all students learn the same way, there will be students who understand the lessons slower than their peers.

TUTORING EVERY SATURDAY MORNING

The end of February was the first tutoring session of the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year for slow-learning first graders at Nguyen Van Tran Primary School, Da Phuoc Commune, Binh Chanh District. Before that, Ms. Tri Thi Hoang Nhiem, head of the first grade subject group, had made a detailed plan for tutoring for the students. The tutoring was announced and agreed upon with the students' parents so that their families could understand and coordinate with the school.

"In the second semester, free tutoring sessions for slow-learning students in grade 1 are held every Saturday morning, from 7:30 to 10:45. Each session has a specific lesson plan, personalized to tutor students on the knowledge they are behind on. In the tutoring session at the end of February, students are trained in reading and writing rhymes with the middle sounds "o" and "u"; practicing addition and subtraction within 10. On Saturday mornings in March, students are trained in reading, writing sentences, short paragraphs, answering questions based on the content of the lesson; practicing word finding and sentence making skills; practicing calculations within 10, 20, 100; and practicing reading, writing, comparing numbers, arranging numbers, writing appropriate calculations, recognizing shapes...", Ms. Nhiem said, adding that the tutoring plan is also flexible. During the implementation process, teachers can adjust the plan and the number of students if they see progress, to suit the actual situation.

FROM NOON, AFTERNOON CLASSES TO NIGHT CLASSES

At 10:40 a.m. on a February day, the students of the 2-session/day class (no boarding school) had gone home. In class 1/7 of Nguyen Cong Tru Primary School, District 8, Ms. Tran Thi Kien Hoa, the homeroom teacher, was sitting with CT reading each word in the reading lesson Talk to you. A moment later, she and the students opened the number board to review the lesson on 2-digit numbers. When CT could read a short sentence fluently or answer correctly, Ms. Hoa always praised him for his good work.

"CT's situation is very pitiful. He is a slow learner, and his mother is illiterate and works as a maid. Many days at noon, I saw him still wandering outside the school gate. When I asked, I found out that his mother had to work until 11:30 to pick him up. I asked the principal and his mother for permission. Instead of tutoring him every afternoon, I taught him from 10:40 to 11:30 so he wouldn't have to wander around the streets," Ms. Hoa said.

In the second semester, in addition to the curriculum, Ms. Hoa is tutoring 5 other students in the class for free, from 4:40 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., twice a week. "When teaching in class, primary school teachers must be patient and gentle, so when tutoring, teachers must be even more patient, both teaching and coaxing, so that students do not get discouraged," Ms. Hoa confided.

At Nguyen Cong Tru Primary School (District 8), the night classes are also lit up 3 nights a week. During the day, they have to sell lottery tickets, help out at a restaurant, and in the evenings, many disadvantaged children from District 8 and Binh Tan District come to class to take free supplementary classes. Teacher Tran Luu Ngoc Tuan (55 years old), homeroom teacher of grade 4, teaches regular classes during the day, and volunteers to teach night classes in the evening. In addition to the supplementary students, in his grade 4 class there are currently 11 slow learners. He reports the situation to the head of the subject group, develops a tutoring plan, the principal approves the plan, and then teaches the students for free every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

"In the night class, 9 students in general education sit together in a row, 11 students in remedial classes are arranged in reasonable seats so that I can conveniently check their lessons and give them individual instructions. When attending night class, parents have to pick them up and drop them off in class. After school, I also have to hand the students back to their parents to feel secure," said Mr. Tuan.

LOVE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Primary school teachers said that the school does not have the budget to support tutors, but love and responsibility motivate them to maintain this job.

Teacher Tran Luu Ngoc Tuan confided: "As a father, I hope my children will progress in their studies, and as a teacher, I hope my students will do better."

Ms. Tran Thi Kien Hoa, who has taught first grade for 16 years, compares first grade knowledge to the hinge of a door. "If the hinge is strong, the door will be stable. If students fall behind by one year, their future will be pushed back by one year. If they lose their foundation in first grade, they will be in a difficult position in second grade and the following grades. Therefore, as long as we can help students improve, we will try our best. Only when we can't do it anymore will we have to let them repeat the grade," Ms. Hoa confided.

Ms. Hoa remembers that in 2018, during the November 20th holiday, a student came to visit her. This student was a first grader who was slow in learning and received extra tutoring. After that, he made a breakthrough in his studies and passed the 10th grade entrance exam to Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted.

Ms. Tri Thi Hoang Nhiem shared: "If students cannot keep up with their studies, we feel that our duties as teachers have not been fulfilled. But when students study better, we are happy and motivated to continue teaching." Ms. Nhiem also said that many students have poor family conditions and circumstances. Therefore, teachers try to spend time tutoring to help them study better, which in the long run will change their lives.

FAMILY CANNOT STAND OUT

According to administrators and teachers, to help elementary school students progress, families cannot stand aside. Many parents have the mentality of leaving their children to teachers, and when their children do not achieve satisfactory academic results, they think the school does not teach well. This thinking needs to change.

Ms. Phung Le Dieu Hanh, Principal of Nguyen Cong Tru Primary School, said that at the school, parents are instructed by teachers on how to support their children's learning at home, avoiding excessive pressure or incorrect teaching methods.

Ms. Tri Thi Hoang Nhiem also shared that the school's grade 1 teachers often discuss with parents about creating a reasonable home study schedule, ensuring a balance between studying and resting.

"An important thing that many families often do not pay attention to is the learning environment at home. Parents should create a quiet space for their children to study, avoiding distractions from TV, phones... We recommend that parents spend time reading books with their children, talking about lessons to help them feel interested in learning. The most important thing is to help children form the habit of self-study, not being forced but still being responsible for their studies," said Ms. Nhiem.

Do not slack off on reviewing and training students with unsatisfactory learning results.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has issued Official Dispatch No. 674/SGDĐT-VP on the implementation of Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training regulating extra teaching and learning. Accordingly, the Department emphasized that localities and schools "absolutely do not relax the organization of review and training for students with unsatisfactory learning results; organize for final grade students to strengthen review for entrance exams and graduation exams according to the school's education plan; determine that this is the responsibility of schools to help students meet the requirements for each subject of each grade according to the regulations of the 2018 General Education Program".
