This month, a group of 20 US Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Vietnam to support English teaching in high schools in Vietnam.

This milestone marks the completion of the 2020 Implementation Agreement between the U.S. and Vietnam governments with the Peace Corps and the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) as implementing agencies.

Volunteers will be assigned to high schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from December 2024.

They will work with local teachers to improve English skills for Vietnamese students, helping to expand educational and employment opportunities.

Some volunteers will co-teach at schools where current volunteers are completing their terms.

“This is the largest group of Peace Corps interns to work in Vietnam, marking the Peace Corps’ continued commitment to building relationships and trust with partners, and marking an important milestone as we celebrate five years of cooperation under the Implementing Agreement between the two countries in 2025,” said Mikel Herrington, Peace Corps Vietnam Director.

Immediately upon arrival in Vietnam, volunteers began a comprehensive 10-week training program, which included Vietnamese language classes, training sessions in Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL), and teaching internships with local teachers.

This training will help them develop the skills needed to adapt to the local context and work effectively in the Vietnamese education system.

Volunteers who complete the program will be officially sworn in in December 2024 and begin their terms.

As the two countries prepare to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025, the presence of these Peace Corps volunteers affirms a shared commitment to deepening people-to-people ties and strengthening bilateral relations.

This new group of volunteers will bring the total number of Peace Corps members serving in Vietnam to 36.

The Peace Corps is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States Government that operates a volunteer program to assist host governments in implementing development priorities.

Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 240,000 U.S. citizen volunteers have served in over 142 countries around the world. Vietnam is the 143rd country to invite and partner with the Peace Corps.

The Peace Corps mission is to promote world peace and friendship through three goals: Cooperating with people in countries in need of trained human resources; Promoting understanding of the people of the countries receiving volunteers by the people of the United States; Promoting understanding of the people of the United States by the people of the countries receiving volunteers.
