Amidst the chaotic sounds of large excavators breaking rocks and removing soil, the shape of the key road to the communes in the Ban Ve lake area (Tuong Duong, Nghe An) has appeared. The small and pretty road, like a golden thread hanging over many mountain slopes to break the isolation and deadlock of a land for generations. Living for a long time next to the largest natural lake in the Central Highlands (Lak Lake), Jun village, Lien Son town, Lak district, Dak Lak province still retains many cultural identities of the Mnong ethnic group. At the end of 2024, Jun village was announced by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Lak province as a community tourism destination, adding motivation for the Mnong people to preserve traditional cultural values associated with tourism development. Every New Year, the villages of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in the Northeastern provinces enthusiastically participate in the Long Tong Festival. This is a unique festival of the Tay and Nung ethnic communities, carrying the message of praying for national peace, people's peace, bountiful harvests, and a prosperous and happy life. The Tay and Nung people have a saying: "Dear, buon Chieng lau pay lieu/Buon nhi mi chiang du dai" which means "Dear, in January we go to the festival/In February our hands and feet do not rest". Every time I have the opportunity to work in Hoang Phi district, Ha Giang province, I always take the time to visit the teachers and students of Then Chu Phin Boarding Ethnic Minority Secondary School. Today was the same, I arrived at the school yard when the drum signaled recess. Two drum beats, three beats resounded loudly, in the vastness of the borderland. The students rushed out of the classroom doors, then called each other to the library and filled the small path between the two large bookshelves placed in the room. After the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025, we went to Ra Giua village, Phuoc Trung commune, Bac Ai district, Ninh Thuan province and were truly impressed with the residential area of the ethnic minority area. Ethnic minorities have a peaceful life. Children go to school to study well, adults let their livestock graze under the forest canopy. In Ra Giua village, the "three-role" woman Chamaléa Thi Khem is a typical example of the local patriotic emulation movement. She actively mobilizes the Raglay people to join hands to build a prosperous village. Living for a long time next to the largest natural lake in the Central Highlands (Lak Lake), Jun village, Lien Son town, Lak district, Dak Lak province still retains many cultural identities typical of the Mnong ethnic group. At the end of 2024, Jun village was announced by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Lak province as a community tourism destination, adding motivation for the Mnong people to preserve traditional cultural values associated with tourism development. In the mixed sounds of large excavators breaking rocks, removing soil... the shape of the key road to the communes in the Ban Ve reservoir area (Tuong Duong, Nghe An) has appeared. The small and pretty road, like a golden thread hanging over many mountain slopes to break the isolation and deadlock of a land for generations. In 2024, the entire Quang Nam tourism industry will welcome more than 8 million visitors with total social income from tourism estimated at more than 21.6 trillion VND. This is a record high number for local tourism to date. Promoting that advantage, from the beginning of 2025, the provincial tourism industry has had a series of impressive tourism stimulus activities and programs, creating highlights to strongly develop tourism in the coming time. Returning to Bao Thang district, Lao Cai province in the first days of the new year At Ty 2025, we can clearly feel the picture of the new rural area gradually emerging. New constructions are springing up, modern and spacious high-rise buildings. Rural roads are expanded, stretching from the district center to the villages, creating a fresh, vibrant appearance. The custom of "za mi gu la" meaning "remarrying one's wife" of the Ha Nhi people in Y Ty commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province is a beautiful custom passed down from generation to generation. According to the Ha Nhi people's concept, that is the only way to fulfill the meaning and love. On February 21, 2025, the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Duong province held a press conference at the beginning of the Spring of At Ty 2025.
Two of the three hard bridges on this traffic route still cannot be loaded, forcing us to choose the waterway to enter the communes in the lake area.
The starting point is still at the Upper Wharf in Yen Na Commune and the stopping point is at Con Phen Village in Huu Khuong Commune, the time is still nearly 2 hours sitting on a swaying motorboat as before, but everyone feels like it is so close. Is it because of the eagerness to soon see the main road to the communes in the Ban Ve Lake area gradually taking shape? Or is it for another reason, the haste and urgency of the workers on the great construction site in the Western region of Nghe An? Who knows, it is also to witness with their own eyes the bridge construction method that is considered "unique" to this point in our country - building a bridge on the lake bed where the water level is far beyond the initial calculation and transporting materials by waterway.
According to the technical economic report: The road is more than 12km long, connecting Yen Tinh commune with Huu Khuong commune, to Nhon Mai and Mai Son communes. When the project is completed and put into operation, it will end the situation of "no road from the district center to the commune center".
The boat docked at Con Phen village, we rode our motorbikes to explore this vital road. Just past the Huu Khuong Commune People’s Committee headquarters, the hard bridge locally known as Cha La 2 was completed and technically opened to traffic. From here, the mountains and forests were cleared and leveled… to level the road. Amidst the deep green of the mountains and forests, of Ban Ve Lake… stood out the newly dug-up earth marks, looking like giant axes that had struck very smoothly.
Our car kept moving forward, occasionally a few motorbikes of the villagers passed by. They went to work in the fields, took their children to school, visited relatives... We went to see the head of Huoi Pung village - Lu Van Nui but he was not at home. The phone connection was weak, but Nui could not hide his joy, as if the joy of the Huoi Pung villagers had gathered in him: "The road is finished, the bridge is almost finished... the villagers will have more convenience in economic development and travel. Especially in terms of travel, tomorrow going to the district center will be very proactive.
Currently, the road from Yen Tinh commune to Huu Khuong, Nhon Mai, Mai Son has completed the roadbed, official vehicles, and local vehicles can travel normally. However, the road is still not open because there are two rigid bridges on the route, Cha La 1 and Suoi Hoc, which have not been able to have beams installed.
Talking about Cha La 1 Bridge, when we were there, we witnessed the bustling and urgent construction atmosphere. The sound of excavators lifting materials from the ferry, the hum of concrete mixers, the continuous sound of hammers hitting piles... sometimes there was also the flashing of drill bits. All seemed to break the silence of the mountains and forests of Western Nghe An.
Cha La 1 Bridge has 4 spans, including 3 piers and 2 abutments. I still remember, when visiting Huu Khuong in September 2024, the bridge construction technical staff shared: "To construct the piers of Cha La 1 Bridge, we have to wait for the flood level of Ban Ve Lake to recede lower before we can start the construction. The construction encountered many difficulties because we could not use large barges to transport machinery that met the bridge construction standards". However, overcoming many difficulties, the bridge workers still tried to speed up the progress, so that the project could be completed soon, meeting the expectations of the Thai, Kho Mu, Mong ethnic minorities of the 3 communes in the Ban Ve Lake area.
An optimistic sign at Cha La 1 Bridge is that workers are currently launching the beams. The beams, weighing hundreds of tons, are cast right under the foot of the bridge, making it very convenient to lift and launch the beams. In just a few months, this bridge will be completed, connecting part of Xan and Pung Bon villages with the center of Huu Khuong commune; reducing the isolation and deadlock in this locality.
Because Cha La 1 Bridge has not been technically opened to traffic, we had to choose the waterway route to approach the Suoi Hoc Bridge project. From the middle of the vast lake, Suoi Hoc Bridge is just two piers and a pillar located close to the water's edge; isolated, lost in the vast green of the mountains and forests.
Currently, construction workers are building a temporary bridge to determine the positions of the bridge piers according to the design drawings. When asked, we learned that because the flood level is higher than the average of many years and higher than the survey, we have to wait until the dry months, when the water level in the lake recedes, to start construction.
Suoi Hoc Bridge is a component with the largest total investment in the Road Construction Project from Yen Tinh Commune to Huu Khuong, to Nhon Mai and Mai Son. On the day we were there, ferries carrying raw materials such as sand, stone, etc. were still being hurriedly gathered by the workers. The journey of the raw materials was also from the Upper wharf of Yen Hoa Commune, taking nearly 2 hours of sluggishness on the lake bed before reaching the wharf for unloading.
We estimate that with the need to carry out construction at a slow pace, waiting for the water level in the lake to recede, and having to transport materials through many stages right on the lake bed, the progress of the bridge in particular, and of the 428.8 billion VND mega-project, is at risk of being delayed and over budget.
Another obstacle at the end of the road from Yen Tinh commune, the section adjacent to Suoi Hoc bridge, is a protruding rock, blocking the designed road section. Chairman of Huu Khuong commune People's Committee - Lo Van Giap said: We heard that we are submitting a budget to break the rock and open the road. If it is completely cleared, the process of transporting construction materials for Suoi Hoc bridge can be done by road.
Going back, we asked for a ride from the locals, right at the foot of Suoi Hoc bridge, heading straight towards Yen Tinh commune. The road from here has been leveled. Official vehicles and motorbikes of people going to the forest and fields can now pass. The ground surface undulated with the acceleration of the driver, making us nervous. The words of the friend who was with us seemed to be lost in the mountain wind: According to the plan, the road opening project in Ban Ve will be completed by the end of 2025, but it will probably be difficult to reach the finish line on time.
