HAVE BETTER ACADEMIC RESULTS
According to the analysis of the learning situation of students at some universities, students admitted by considering high school academic results (also known as considering transcripts) are better than students admitted by other methods. This is specifically shown by the average cumulative score of students over the years of study.
For example, according to the analysis of the cumulative average scores of more than 10,000 students admitted to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education in the last 3 years (2021, 2022, 2023), students admitted based on their transcripts have good academic results. Specifically, in 2021 and 2022, the school used 3 admission methods: direct admission, considering high school academic results and considering high school graduation exam results. By 2023, the school added a new admission method combining high school academic results with the scores of the specialized competency assessment exam organized by the school itself.
Admission based on academic records is one of the main admission methods of many universities today.
For the 2020 admission class, the cumulative average score of students using the direct admission method is 3.31/4; high school academic results are 3.19/4 and high school graduation exam scores are 2.94/4. For the 2021 class, the cumulative average scores of the above methods are as follows: 3.34/4; 3.22/4; 3.06/4. For the 2023 admission class, the average score of the direct admission method is 3.22/4; considering high school academic results is 2.96/4; considering high school graduation exam scores is 2.85/4; combining high school academic scores and specialized competency assessment exam scores is 3.22/4.
From the above data, Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that the learning outcomes of students admitted using the method of using high school learning results are higher than those admitted using the method of considering high school graduation exam scores; but lower than the group of direct admission methods (including direct admission according to the criteria of the Ministry of Education and Training and the school's priority admission).
EQUIVALENT TO OTHER METHODS
At some other universities, data collected on thousands of students also shows that there is a similarity in learning outcomes between the two methods. For example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry has just analyzed and compared the learning outcomes of students according to 4 admission methods: considering high school graduation exam scores, high school learning results, competency assessment test scores and priority admission. Based on a 4-point scale, the school counted the percentage of students achieving each score range according to the methods. From that data, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of the Training Department, said that the results showed that the learning process of students according to the two methods of considering high school graduation exam scores and high school learning results was at an equivalent level. The two methods of considering competency assessment test scores and priority admission had slightly higher abilities.
Recently, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade also announced the statistics of the results of the graduation classification of students according to the admission method from 2019 to 2023. Accordingly, the admission method based on high school graduation exam scores has the rate of excellent students reaching 0.21%; good 6.56%; good 69.24% and average 23.98%. Meanwhile, this rate in the admission method based on high school transcripts includes: excellent 0.24%; good 5.44%; good 65.12% and average 29.2%. Thus, the learning results of students based on high school graduation exam scores have the same rate as students enrolled based on transcripts.
Universities use many forms of admission based on transcripts.
DROPOUT RATES BETWEEN SCHOOLS
Dr. Pham Tan Ha, Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the method of giving priority to students from the list of 149 high schools according to the regulations of the National University of Ho Chi Minh City uses the academic transcript scores as a basis for evaluation. Through randomly running scores on the learning results of this group of students, the school found that most of them achieved good or better results and the rate of dropping out of school midway was very low.
Meanwhile, there are schools where the analysis results show the opposite situation. According to the statistics of a local public university, up to 20% of students (equivalent to more than 1,000 students) are classified as weak, having been admitted based on the results of their academic records. These students dropped out or were forced to drop out due to poor academic results in the first 1-2 semesters.
DEPENDS ON ENTRANCE RESULTS
According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha, the academic performance of university students will depend largely on the results of the entrance examination. Regardless of the admission method used, if a group of candidates with good academic ability is recruited, their university academic results will be equivalent. Therefore, even with the method of considering academic records, if a group of candidates with good academic ability is recruited, whose academic ability has been confirmed throughout 3 years of high school, will also have good results when entering university.
Currently, the method of considering based on academic records is implemented by schools in many different ways. However, according to Dr. Ha, considering academic records based on the 3-year learning process will confirm the learner's ability more clearly. In particular, the stable learning ability of students in grades 10 and 11 is very important because students often have higher results in grade 12.
Student learning outcomes from different admission methods in some universities
The above statement is also true for the specific case of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Last year, the school reserved a maximum of 10% of its quota for considering the average score of 3 subjects based on the results of 6 semesters of high school. Of which, 4 majors had a standard score above 29, including: chemistry pedagogy, mathematics pedagogy, biology pedagogy and physics pedagogy. Master Le Phan Quoc said that the school's viewpoint is still to maintain the diversity of admission methods with the desire to attract top candidates to participate in the school's admission. When the entrance results are high, the university-level learning results are naturally similar.
Although the analysis results show the similarity in academic ability between students based on their transcripts and their graduation exam scores, Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, acknowledged that this is only a specific case at a university. Mr. Son said that the above results may be different from other schools. This is partly due to the specific scoring method of the transcript review method and the standard score for each major. On the other hand, in addition to the input admission factor, the learning outcomes of students also depend on the training process at that school. According to the admission method of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade in recent years, the transcript review method is based on the scores of the first 5 semesters of high school, the standard score ranges from 22 to 27; the standard score for the high school graduation exam method ranges from 18 to 25.
The university representative has statistics showing that many students admitted by transcripts have poor academic results, and concluded that the reason is that the method of considering transcripts is only based on the scores of 3 subjects of the 12th grade results. Among them, there are students who combined the admission by transcripts of 3 subjects and scored 25 points, but the corresponding high school graduation exam score was only 8-10 points (a difference of up to 17 points). The academic results of these students after the first two semesters at the university were only average.
Many ways to consider transcripts
Currently, considering transcripts has become a major admission method of many universities. However, in recent years, universities have applied many different forms of admission based on students' transcript scores. Some schools only use one method, but some schools use many methods of considering transcripts at the same time.
Specifically: considering the average score of 6 semesters of high school, the average score of 3 semesters, the average score of 3 subjects according to the admission combination in 6 semesters, the average score of 3 subjects according to the admission combination in 3 semesters, even the average score of 3 subjects according to the separate admission combination in grade 12...
Many schools only use high school academic results as a criterion for admission. In that case, the transcript score is used in combination with other criteria depending on each school's regulations such as: separate exams, international certificates, etc.
