After 28 years of working in aquaculture in Khanh Hoa, Ms. Dang Thi Tam (born in 1972, in Xuan Phuong village, My An commune, Phu My district, Binh Dinh province) decided to return to her hometown to start a business with a snail farming model.
The life of the people in Xuan Phuong village is quite difficult, mainly doing agriculture. Therefore, before the age of 20, Ms. Tam went to Khanh Hoa to work for hire. After a period of working for hire, learning aquaculture techniques, Ms. Tam and her husband raised shrimp for breeding, shrimp for meat...
Having experienced many ups and downs in the profession, sometimes being well-off, sometimes exhausted due to disease, having a "good season with low prices", facing many difficulties in shrimp farming, Ms. Tam and her husband decided to switch to raising snails. Snail farming in Khanh Hoa was stable, but 6 years ago, Ms. Tam and her husband decided to move this model back to their hometown.
Borrowing 100 million VND from the Social Policy Bank, plus the money borrowed from relatives and savings, totaling about 2 billion VND, Ms. Tam and her husband rented land, improved the land, bought seeds and started raising snails in their hometown.
Ms. Tam said that because of previous experience, her husband and she's farming snails in My An commune is quite favorable.
"The water used to raise snails is taken from underground so it is very clean. Thanks to that, raising snails in the countryside is also more successful. Every year, my family's revenue reaches about 1.2 billion VND.
Raising snails has many advantages such as: low care, only feeding once a day, very low feed costs. Notably, we can use feed from processed trash fish to replace industrial feed. Thanks to that, we save significantly on production costs."
Realizing the effectiveness of this model, many families in My An commune and Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces also came to learn from its experience.
Locally, Ms. Tam is the Vice President of the Village Women's Association, always dedicated and wholeheartedly involved in the women's movement and Association work.
Being hard-working and diligent, in addition to raising snails, Ms. Tam also provides other services. After attending a cooking class organized by the Women's Union of the commune, she opened a mobile party cooking service.
This service has created jobs for about a dozen local female workers, with an income of about 2.5 to 3 million VND/month.
"If I am healthy, I must take advantage of many opportunities to work, also creating jobs and income for women in difficult circumstances. I also want my efforts and diligence to be an example for my children to follow, so that they can see that diligence will create results and always strive to develop the family economy every day," Ms. Tam shared.
In 2023, Ms. Dang Thi Tam was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province for having an effective and stable production model, helping farmers to reduce poverty and create jobs and income for workers from 2022 to 2023.
Locally, Ms. Tam is the Vice President of the Village Women's Association, always dedicated and wholeheartedly involved in the women's movement and Association work.
