Development of collective economy and cooperatives

Việt NamViệt Nam13/04/2025

On April 11, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh wrote a letter to Vietnamese farmers and landlords calling for participation in agricultural cooperatives. With many important events, April 11 was recognized by the Prime Minister as Vietnam Cooperative Day. Over the past 79 years, the cooperative community has overcome many challenges, promoted solidarity, and made certain contributions to economic development. In Cao Bang, the province's collective economic sector, the core of which is cooperatives, has operated relatively stably, with the number and quality of cooperatives increasing day by day. Cooperatives continue to focus on innovating management methods, promoting production and business activities, creating jobs and stable income for members and workers.

The activities of the collective economic sector and cooperatives contribute significantly to the local new rural construction movement and the overall socio-economic development of the province.

By the end of the first quarter of 2025, the whole province had 448 cooperatives, of which 179 cooperatives operated in the fields of agriculture and forestry, accounting for 40%; 96 cooperatives in construction materials production, accounting for 21%; 96 cooperatives in industry and handicrafts, accounting for 22%; 42 cooperatives in trade and services, accounting for 9.3%; 20 cooperatives in transportation, accounting for 4.3%; 15 cooperatives in the environment, accounting for 3.4%. Four new cooperatives were established, two cooperatives were admitted to the Provincial Cooperative Union, bringing the total number of members of the Provincial Cooperative Union to 199 at present. According to the assessment, cooperatives are increasingly consolidated in terms of management organization, capital fund, responsibility and closer relations between members and cooperatives. Cooperative activities are practically innovated in line with the interests of members. Most cooperatives have specific goals, plans, and operational strategies. Typically, many cooperatives operating in the agricultural sector have played a good role in linking farmers together to shift from small-scale production to large-scale, highly efficient commodity production. The average revenue of cooperatives is estimated at about 609 million VND/cooperative/year; the average profit of cooperatives is estimated at 72 million VND/cooperative/year. Cooperatives have promoted their role in production and business activities, especially cooperatives operating effectively have had many positive impacts, bringing benefits to members. The activities of the province's collective economic sector have contributed significantly to the local new rural construction movement and the overall socio-economic development of the province.

In order for the collective economic sector and cooperatives to continue operating effectively, in the coming time, collective economic models in general and cooperatives in particular must change their methods of operation to suit the requirements, be proactive, creative, grasp information, access advanced science and technology to apply in production, suitable to reality. At the same time, innovate production and business methods, improve competitiveness and operational efficiency of collective economies and cooperatives; mobilize cooperatives to attract new members; pay attention to developing both agricultural and non-agricultural cooperatives; remove barriers and obstacles to improve the ability to mobilize and access resources for cooperatives.

As a bridge, in the Action Month for Cooperatives in 2025 with the theme "Cooperatives - Building a better world", culminating in April 2025, the Provincial Cooperative Alliance will aim to carry out communication activities to raise awareness of collective economy, cooperatives and the core role in collective economic development; organize dialogue activities between leaders of local Party committees and authorities with cooperatives and members; activities to accompany, advise, support the development and improve the operational efficiency of cooperatives as well as activities to consolidate, innovate, develop the Cooperative Alliance system and improve the operational efficiency of cooperatives.
