(CLO) If you need to access your computer remotely while traveling or working remotely, you will now have to use Windows App - an alternative application to Remote Desktop on Windows.

The Remote Desktop app used to be one of the simplest ways to remotely connect to a PC, allowing users to access it and even perform some basic file transfers. However, since the Windows 11 October 2024 update, the app has been plagued with issues.

In September 2024, Microsoft began consolidating some of its remote connection services into the Windows App – a new app that aims to provide a unified remote control solution for users across PCs and mobile devices. After completing the transition of users to the Windows App, Microsoft announced that it would discontinue support for the Remote Desktop app.

In a recent statement, Microsoft said: "Starting May 27, 2025, the Remote Desktop app on the Microsoft Store will no longer be supported or available for download and installation. Users will need to switch to the Windows App to continue accessing Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box."

There are a few things to keep in mind when transitioning from Remote Desktop to Windows App. If you are using Remote Desktop Connection, you will need to continue using it until the same feature is integrated into Windows App.

If you are using Remote Desktop Services, use RemoteApp & Desktop Connection until Windows App supports this connection type.

Microsoft's removal of Remote Desktop is part of its strategy to optimize remote connection services and enhance security, while encouraging users to move to a new platform with more integrated features.

The decision to remove Remote Desktop may affect some businesses and individuals who rely on the application. However, according to technology experts, this move allows Microsoft to focus on developing a more modern, secure remote control platform.

Microsoft is one of several major tech companies that have made similar changes. Google has discontinued its traditional Chrome Remote Desktop app in favor of a web version. Apple is also upgrading its remote control capabilities on macOS to better compete.

While the change may be inconvenient at first, in the long run, users will benefit from a more secure and efficient remote connectivity ecosystem.
