At the meeting, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh highly appreciated the cooperation and support activities of UNDP for Vietnam in general and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in particular. The Minister affirmed that UNDP has always been one of the important partners of the Ministry with many cooperation and support activities in the fields of environmental protection, biodiversity, ocean plastic waste management and circular economy.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh said that Vietnam is currently one of the countries most severely affected by climate change. Therefore, Vietnam always strives to adapt to climate change and develop green in a sustainable way.
In recent times, Vietnam has made continuous efforts to improve its policies with many drastic actions. Specifically, Vietnam has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC); issued the National Strategy on Climate Change for the period up to 2050, approved the Power Development Plan VIII, and the National Energy Master Plan.
On this occasion, the Minister thanked UNDP for supporting the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, together with other ministries and sectors, in developing the Plan for mobilizing resources to implement Vietnam's JETP, which was recently announced at the COP28 Conference. This is the clearest evidence of the effective cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and UNDP.
At the meeting, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh asked UNDP to continue supporting Vietnam in enhancing climate change adaptation capacity for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups; promoting solutions to enhance the resilience of vulnerable groups to the negative impacts of natural disasters and extreme weather; and implementing the Resource Mobilization Plan to implement JETP.
In addition to responding to climate change, the Minister also requested UNDP to support the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in mobilizing resources to protect the environment and reduce plastic waste pollution; continue to support Vietnam in promoting green economy, circular economy, low-carbon economy; building marine spatial planning; developing blue marine economy; handling plastic waste pollution; conserving biodiversity...
Expressing his deep impression of the natural beauty as well as the friendliness of the Vietnamese people, Mr. Achim Steiner said that UNDP will always accompany and wish to continue contributing to Vietnam's sustainable development, environmental protection, greenhouse gas emission reduction and climate change adaptation, towards Vietnam's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
In responding to climate change, UNDP will continue to support Vietnam in reviewing and developing its Nationally Determined Contributions in preparation for COP30 to take place in Brazil in 2025.
UNDP will also cooperate and support Vietnam in researching and developing standards in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, cooperate in developing a blue ocean economy to promote Vietnam's marine potential and advantages, and support Vietnam in addressing plastic pollution...
On this occasion, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh respectfully invited Mr. Achim Steiner to visit and work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2024. Mr. Achim Steiner happily accepted the invitation and looked forward to visiting Vietnam again soon to witness the achievements in Vietnam's socio-economic development and continue to promote cooperation activities in the field of natural resources and environment.
Previously, at the Announcement Ceremony of the Resource Mobilization Plan for the implementation of JETP, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP Regional Director for Africa, congratulated Minister Dang Quoc Khanh on the Resource Mobilization Plan announced on the occasion of COP28 and affirmed that UNDP will continue to support Vietnam and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in the implementation of the Plan.
