The Kyiv Independent on January 26 quoted Governor Vadym Filashkin in Donetsk province as saying that the provincial authorities decided to begin mandatory evacuation of families with children in 20 settlements in the area, citing accusations that Russia has increased shelling.

Ukraine stepped up evacuations from Donetsk throughout the summer and fall as Russian forces intensified their offensive in the east. Despite these efforts, some 307,000 civilians remained in Ukrainian-controlled areas as of early January.

Some of the settlements under evacuation orders are less than 15 kilometers from the city of Pokrovsk, one of the focus of Russian attacks. Russia has not commented on the reports but has always denied that it targets civilians.

Ukraine attacks Russian oil refinery

The Ukrainian military said on January 26 that its air defense forces had shot down 50 of 72 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Ukrainian military and civilian officials have not yet recorded information about casualties or damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia used 1,250 aerial bombs, more than 750 UAVs and 20 missiles to attack Ukraine in the past week, according to Reuters.

"Long-range capabilities are important. Sanctions are necessary. Lowering oil prices is important. What is key is acting in solidarity and saving lives with determination," he added.

The Ukrainian General Staff issued a statement on January 26 saying its forces attacked Russia's Ryazan oil refinery again on the night of January 25 with reports of explosions and fires in the target area.

"The Ryazan oil refinery is one of the four largest oil refineries in the Russian Federation," the statement said.

US stops military aid to Ukraine

On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that its air defense system destroyed 15 Ukrainian UAVs in Russian airspace and two unmanned boats in the Black Sea.

Accordingly, 8 UAVs were shot down in the Ryazan region, 6 others were destroyed in the Kursk region and one was hit in the Belgorod region during the night.

Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov said there were no casualties in the drone attacks, but authorities were still estimating the damage.

In another development, Reuters on January 26 quoted information from the Russian Defense Ministry saying that Russian soldiers had just taken control of two more villages, Zelene and Velyka Novosilka, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine have not immediately commented on the information.

Mr. Zelensky's comments about Mr. Trump

According to President Zelensky, US President Donald Trump can fulfill his commitment to ending the war in Ukraine, but only if he lets Kyiv participate in any dialogue.

Mr Zelensky also said the terms of any deal that might emerge under Mr Trump were unclear, while Russian President Vladimir Putin was not interested in ending the fighting.

During his campaign, Mr Trump vowed to end the fighting in Ukraine within his first 24 hours in the White House, but did not elaborate on how. Aides later suggested that a deal could take months.

Mr. Trump wants to meet, Mr. Putin says ready

In an interview on January 25, Mr. Zelensky believed that Mr. Trump wanted to end this war.

“Right now, we don’t know how this will play out because we don’t know the details,” Zelensky said.

According to the Ukrainian President, Mr Trump understands all the challenges involved in the peace process "and he simply said that this must end or it will get worse".

In addition, Mr. Zelensky also said that European countries should participate in any dialogue that may take place in the near future to end the war in Ukraine.
