The Vietnamese team defeated Hong Kong (China) in the first match under coach Philippe Troussier. However, the performance of Que Ngoc Hai and his teammates could hardly satisfy the fans at Lach Tray Stadium as well as the television audience.
Troussier's style has not been reflected in the way the Vietnamese team plays. Hong Kong (China) is theoretically an underdog. This is the "blue team" for coach Troussier to test his team's ability to play offensively. In this respect, the Vietnamese team has not been able to demonstrate, even compared to the performance of the U23 juniors at the 32nd SEA Games.

However, it should be noted that under coach Park Hang Seo, the Vietnamese team is particularly good at taking advantage of situations. This was not shown in the first match under coach Troussier. Perhaps the reason lies in Quang Hai and his teammates trying to play according to the plan and when they cannot coordinate smoothly, the Vietnamese team's attacking play is ineffective and not maintained continuously.
Improving the attacking ability is one of the points that fans expect from the Vietnamese team under Coach Troussier. However, the Vietnamese team in the match against Hong Kong (China) played an attacking game no different from the version under Coach Park Hang Seo, even less effective because the players lacked moments of breakthrough.
However, the Vietnamese team's erratic performance is not surprising. This is the first match Quang Hai and his teammates have played under coach Troussier, plus the short training session in March was nearly 3 weeks to get used to the requirements of the new tactics. The match against Hong Kong (China) shows that coach Troussier still has a lot of work to do to change the way the Vietnamese team plays.
The French coach is facing a different kind of test, no longer an attacking "practice session". Syria is theoretically a stronger team than Vietnam.
