On the evening of October 12, striker Nguyen Van Quyet confirmed that he would retire from international football and the Vietnam national team. This was a sad farewell for Van Quyet, as he had just returned to the team after a long absence under coach Park Hang-seo and coach Philippe Troussier.
After the draw with India, Mr. Troussier posted an article on his personal page, paying tribute to the international career of the Hanoi FC striker: "To me, Van Quyet is still a great player in the history of Vietnamese football. He is one of the most creative players that this country's football has ever produced. With Van Quyet's personality, he will continue to contribute to Vietnamese football in the future."
Van Quyet (10) was not called up to the national team under coach Troussier.
Van Quyet used to be a mainstay of the Vietnam national team. He participated in the AFF Cup 5 times, the highlight of which was the championship in 2018. However, this was not a memorable tournament for Van Quyet personally, because the Hanoi FC striker mainly came on the field from the bench. After that, Van Quyet was not called up to the national team.
In his tribute to Van Quyet, Coach Troussier also expressed his regret at not being able to work with him when he was at his peak: "At the time I took over, I had the opportunity to work with him. Now that I think back, I regret not summoning Van Quyet at his peak.
I explained to Van Quyet that physical strength is the biggest obstacle preventing him from joining the national team, it is very difficult for me to put him in a position on the field. However, I also told Van Quyet to be ready at all times, because when the team needs him, only he possesses the special qualities."
Saying goodbye to the Vietnam national team, Van Quyet is still a legend at Hanoi Club.
Mr. Troussier also described Van Quyet as a player who is tactically intelligent and possesses top-notch football skills. "He knows how to create moments of individual genius, breaking the structure of conventional collective football. This is a valuable quality of an attacking player," the former head coach of the national team added.
Van Quyet debuted for the Vietnam national team in 2011. After 13 years, Van Quyet played 60 matches for the national team, scoring 16 goals. At the club level, Van Quyet won many titles and scored 116 goals in the V.League. He is one of the best players in the history of domestic football.
After the FIFA Days training session in October, he will join the club to prepare for the latest match of round 4 of V.League, against the club in the same city, Cong An Ha Noi.
