Visitors to the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts.
Breathe life into objects
The National Museum of History is one of the first museums in Vietnam to apply technology in museum exhibitions. The technology application of the National Museum of History focuses mostly on promoting values such as 3D display systems, digitizing some national treasures and other application programs... These are technology applications in promoting the collection values of the museum.
The rapid development of technology has changed the perception and approach to cultural heritage. In the field of museums, not only the National Museum of History, but also the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum has recently applied iMusuem VFA multimedia explanations in 9 languages. When the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum launched a 3D tour, allowing visitors to experience a 360-degree view of the Museum's permanent exhibition system wherever they are. In just 1 week, this tour attracted nearly 70,000 experiences, while the Museum usually only welcomes about 70,000 visitors/year.
Dr. Nguyen Anh Minh - Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum said that from that result, the idea of creating an online art exhibition space, designing different galleries, suitable for materials and images for artists to choose, register to bring the exhibition to cyberspace, instead of just organizing it in a real exhibition room.
Along with the digital transformation of artifacts at Yen Bai Provincial Museum into a virtual reality (VR) museum, the Museum has also boldly coordinated with Hanoi Color Company to build and exploit automatic explanation software. This is a breakthrough in introducing the Museum's collections of artifacts and exhibition content, a new product that brings the public convenience and ease when learning and exploring heritages.
Mr. Hoang Tien Long - Director of Yen Bai Provincial Museum said that in the context of the country entering a period of innovation and deep integration, the museum also needs to innovate all its activities, especially the stages of propaganda and promotion to attract visitors, towards tourism development. The application of information technology to the stages of museum work in general, and propaganda and promotion in particular, contributes to affirming the position of the museum, the ability to integrate and adapt to the general development trend of society.
The platform is still content
According to experts, in the process of applying technology and implementing digital transformation for museums, the most important thing is still focusing on the quality of content, not just the technology that has been applied.
While technology plays a vital role in recreating and delivering visitor experiences, content is the core element in creating interaction and engagement with users. This requires careful investment in researching, gathering and presenting information in an engaging and creative way.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoan - Deputy Director of the National Museum of History said that some visitors commented that viewing virtual exhibitions is easier to understand, more detailed and informative than visiting real exhibitions. For example, when observing the Ngoc Lu bronze drum in the glass cabinet at the Museum, it is impossible to fully appreciate the values of this national treasure. But when visiting the 3D virtual interactive exhibition, visitors can observe the decorative motifs, as well as detailed information about the artifacts and interact with the tour content they want... However, saying that does not mean that virtual museums can replace real museums. Because the artifacts displayed at the museum are original artifacts, they bring direct emotions to people, thereby arousing values. Building digital technology transformation and real museums are two parallel things that coexist.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Huy - former Director of the Museum of Ethnology, applying scientific and technological advances to museums is very necessary, but it must still be based on good basic displays and good content foundation. If the basic displays are not good, all of those things are just formalities and waste money. If the story is not touching, then using QR codes will only become vague, general, and tasteless. When museums are still poor, they should focus on content innovation before deploying technology to become smart museums. Besides, museums must have messages, each display and artifact is a story, each story has a message, many small messages make up a big message. And that story is both the art of storytelling with artifacts and the application of technology.
Ms. Tu Thi Thu Hang - Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts noted that if digital transformation is important in creating, connecting, and exploiting data, in the field of cultural heritage, the important issue is digitizing heritage, popularizing heritage values, and creating new values and new cultural products in the digital environment.
