One of the two solutions is to detect students' knowledge gaps, on that basis AI will suggest the content students need to improve.

On November 22, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training organized a scientific conference "Big data and artificial intelligence in education: from challenge to breakthrough".

Two AI solutions

At the workshop, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that Ho Chi Minh City has chosen two solutions to test the application of AI in education. Solution 1 is to support students in adjusting their own learning path. Solution 2 is to detect students' knowledge gaps, on that basis, AI will suggest the content that students need to improve.

"Every student has different needs, learning pace and learning abilities. Self-paced learning puts students in control of their educational journey, making choices about what, how and when they learn.

The AI model developed by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training aims to support students in self-adjusting their learning path by analyzing learners' interactions with tasks on the LMS system.

The model will provide personalized recommendations for each student, such as areas to focus on improving; additional materials or activities; adjustments to study schedules; strategies to improve learning efficiency..." - Mr. Minh said.

Regarding the second solution, Mr. Minh informed that AI will analyze historical data from competency surveys and question banks. Thereby, AI will predict specific content and knowledge that students may need additional support.

And the challenges

"Currently, we are in the stage of collecting and integrating data for AI. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is also facing many challenges such as infrastructure limitations (lack of suitable server infrastructure equipped with graphics processing units - GPUs).

Without GPU acceleration, training AI models would be significantly slower, reducing the feasibility of iterative development and large-scale deployment. This limitation affects not only the speed but also the scalability of AI solutions, as processing large datasets becomes practically infeasible with standard CPU resources," Minh shared.

According to Mr. Minh, purchasing GPUs through state budget investment is not feasible due to export policies from chip-producing countries. Using AI cloud platforms or APIs from providers like OpenAI incurs significant costs, especially when the solution is used to serve a large number of users.

Cloud services charge based on usage, including data processing, storage, and API calls. For public operations with limited budgets, these ongoing costs pose a financial burden…

Accelerating digital transformation in education

The scientific conference "Big data and artificial intelligence in education: from challenges to breakthroughs" had more than 350 delegates from the Ministry of Education and Training, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, departments of education and training in the Southeast region, digital transformation experts...

This is one of the activities to promote the progress of implementing tasks and effectively implementing the Plan to enhance the application of information technology and digital transformation of the education and training sector for the period 2022 - 2025, with a vision to 2030 in the provinces of the Southeast region.

The workshop had many presentations on models, solutions, and good technologies from education and training departments, experts, and businesses with experience in digital transformation. At the same time, the workshop also introduced breakthrough models and solutions that education departments in the Southeast region are preparing to deploy in the next phase.
