Foreign criminals enter Vietnam under the guise of tourism and investment to traffic drugs.

On the morning of November 29, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (C04, Ministry of Public Security) held a conference to summarize the peak of propaganda, attack, and suppression of drug crimes on the Vietnam - Cambodia border in 2023.

According to Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Vien - Director of Department C04, in recent years, on the Vietnam - Cambodia border, drug trafficking and illegal transportation crimes have many complex factors and are on the rise.

Criminals take full advantage of the convenient travel and trade between the two countries, as well as the difficulties and loopholes in inspection and control work, to illegally buy, sell and transport drugs from the "golden triangle" area through Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia to Vietnam and then to a third country for consumption.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Vien said that some foreigners enter Vietnam under the guise of tourism, visiting relatives, investing in business, etc. to disguise themselves and connect with domestic subjects to establish "front" businesses and companies, which are actually used to organize the production, trading, and illegal transportation of drugs.

The Director of Department C04 assessed that these factors made the drug situation in both countries continue to have many complicated developments last year.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Vien emphasized that in the coming time, the situation of drug crime activities along the border of the two countries has not decreased, but even tends to increase, with complicated developments in terms of scale, nature and scope of activities, requiring the two sides to further promote cooperation.

The Director of Department C04 said that in the coming time, the two countries need to set and successfully implement goals.

Specifically, strengthen and improve the quality of information exchange on drug and precursor control through the hotline between the two countries. Coordinate investigation, verification, and dismantling of drug rings, arrest of criminals and drug wanted subjects.

In addition, strengthen the implementation of public control of key drug-related areas such as roads, waterways, airports, ports in border areas or sensitive areas such as casino business areas to promptly detect and arrest drug-related crimes; strengthen the management of social order and safety in border provinces of the two countries.

The police of the border provinces of the two countries and related localities need to closely coordinate with functional forces on the other side of the border, especially deploying working groups to coordinate the fight against and dismantle transnational drug trafficking and transportation rings between Vietnam and Cambodia...
