(CLO) A US appeals court on Friday rejected TikTok's emergency request to temporarily block a law requiring its Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest from the short video app by January 19 or face a ban.

On Monday, TikTok and ByteDance filed an emergency petition with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, asking for more time to present their case to the U.S. Supreme Court. The companies warned that without court action, the law would “shut down TikTok” in the United States.

On the same day, two US lawmakers said in a letter to company executives on Friday that Alphabet, Google's parent company, and Apple must be ready to remove TikTok from US app stores by January 19.

The bipartisan letter comes from the two leaders of the House China Committee: Republican Representative John Moolenaar, who chairs the committee, and the group’s top Democrat, Raja Krishnamoorthi. They also urge TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to sell the app.

Last week, a US federal appeals court upheld a law requiring China-based ByteDance to divest its US holdings of TikTok or face a ban. The app is used by 170 million Americans.
