Images of the F-18 fighter jet crash at the Spanish base
Video footage of the crash shows the F-18 jet taking off at high speed and in a steep direction, before stopping and turning upside down and falling to the ground. A huge fireball erupted in the direction of the crash, which the Spanish Air Force confirmed was within the range of the base.
The pilot, with more than 1,000 hours of flying experience, ejected from the cockpit using emergency procedures and parachuted to the ground. However, he suffered injuries to his arms, legs, and hips during the landing.
The Spanish Air Force confirmed the pilot was taken to hospital and his life was not in danger.
The crash site is also located next to a busy highway. According to the Spanish Air Force, some of the plane's debris was scattered outside the base. The fighter jet was completely destroyed after hitting the ground.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation. The F-18 crash at the Spanish base is the latest incident involving the country's F-18 fleet.
In 2017, an F-18 fighter jet crashed while taking off from an air base near Madrid, killing the pilot. This followed three F-18 crashes in the country in 2009, and another in 2003.
The Spanish Air Force currently has 84 F-18s, and the European country intends to replace this fleet with the F-35 fighter jet.
