Crew members working on ships using low-flashpoint fuels must attend training courses to gain knowledge in safe ship operation (Illustration photo).
Accordingly, the basic ship training program according to the IGF Code is designed to train and coach seafarers responsible for specific safety tasks related to the storage, use or emergency response to fuel on board.
The International Code for the Safety of Ships Using Gaseous Fuels or Low Flashpoint Fuels (IGF) includes mandatory requirements applicable to the arrangement, installation, control and supervision of machinery, equipment and systems using low flashpoint fuels.
The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a fuel continues to burn for a short period of time after ignition begins.
For the basic training program, seafarers will be trained and educated on many knowledge according to the IGF Code such as safe ship operation; implementing precautions to prevent dangers on ships; applying occupational safety and health precautions and measures on ships; performing fire fighting activities on ships.
In addition, crew members must have knowledge and skills to respond to emergency situations and take precautions to prevent environmental pollution from fuel leaks detected on board.
With the advanced training program, seafarers after completing this training course must meet the requirements of the IGF Code such as familiarizing themselves with the physical and chemical properties of fuel on board ships; controlling fuel operations related to propulsion equipment and machinery systems as well as services and safety equipment on board ships; the ability to demonstrate safe operation and inspection of all activities related to fuel used on board ships.
At the same time, crew members can plan and check the safe delivery, loading and securing of fuel on board, understand the precautions to prevent environmental pollution due to fuel leakage from the ship and check and control compliance with laws and precautions to prevent hazards.
Seafarers are also required to apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures on board, and have knowledge of fire prevention, control, extinguishment and fire extinguishing systems on board.
To be eligible for advanced training, the master, chief engineer, officers and all persons directly responsible for the storage, use of fuel and fuel systems on ships using low flashpoint fuels must be trained.
At the same time, have a Certificate of basic ship training according to the IGF Code, or basic Gas ship, advanced Gas ship.
The new regulation allows training and education establishments to conduct online training. However, training establishments are allowed to organize online training of appropriate theoretical content if equipped with an online training management system, the number of online learning hours does not exceed 30% of the total program duration.
For this training program, instructors and trainers must have an unrestricted Certificate of Competency for Captains and Chief Engineers, as well as at least 3 months of experience working on ships under the IGF Code or equivalent, or a certificate of basic shipboard training under the IGF Code, as well as a Master Trainer Certificate.
