On the afternoon of October 16, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on the occasion of his official visit to Vietnam and co-chaired the 18th meeting of the Vietnam-India Joint Committee on Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technological Cooperation.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted the long-standing traditional friendship between the two nations, founded by their great leaders, President Ho Chi Minh and Mahatma Gandhi, and nurtured by many generations and people of the two countries.

The Prime Minister welcomed the two Foreign Ministries for successfully organizing the Joint Committee meeting with many important results, promptly proposing measures to remove obstacles, actively bringing cooperation into a more practical and effective manner. The Prime Minister suggested that the two Foreign Ministries coordinate and prepare well for high-level activities on all channels, regularly maintain bilateral cooperation mechanisms and promote people-to-people exchanges.

The Indian Foreign Minister affirmed that India considers Vietnam an important partner in the region in implementing the “Act East” policy. India wishes to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam.

The Prime Minister highly appreciated the defense and security cooperation between the two countries and asked India to continue supporting Vietnam in training and improving the capacity of defense and security forces; and promote cooperation in cyber security.

The Prime Minister emphasized the complementary strengths of the two economies and asked ministries and sectors on both sides to make efforts to further increase two-way trade turnover, towards the target of 20 billion USD.

The two sides need to facilitate the opening of markets for each other's products, limit the application of trade barriers; consider negotiating and signing cooperation documents to create a favorable corridor for trade and investment, promote connectivity between the two economies in terms of goods, services, interbank payments and digital payments...

Minister S. Jaishankar conveyed the regards of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, expressing his hope to welcome the Prime Minister to an official visit to India in the near future.

The Prime Minister suggested that India encourage large corporations to invest in Vietnam in strategically important areas such as infrastructure, seaports, logistics, oil and gas exploration and exploitation, and renewable energy.

The Prime Minister also suggested that the two sides actively expand cooperation in new areas such as digital transformation, climate change response and energy transition, green growth, etc.

Minister S. Jaishankar affirmed that he will closely coordinate with the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement the results achieved at the 18th meeting of the Joint Committee, especially in the fields of defense-security, economy, trade, investment, science and technology.

The Indian Foreign Minister stressed that India always attaches importance to cooperation with Vietnam and ASEAN. India is ready to engage more strongly with the region and contribute its positive voice to maintain peace, stability, cooperation and development.

Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India's stance supporting ASEAN's central role and ASEAN's basic principles in resolving regional issues, including the East Sea issue.

Earlier this morning, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Indian Foreign Minister co-chaired the 18th meeting of the Vietnam-India Joint Committee on economic, trade, scientific and technological cooperation.

The meeting was attended by representatives of ministries and sectors of the two countries. The two sides reviewed and comprehensively assessed bilateral relations since the 17th meeting (August 2020) and the implementation of the Vietnam-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the 2021-2023 period.

The two sides recognized that economic and trade cooperation has recovered and developed well after the pandemic, with two-way trade turnover in 2022 exceeding the 15 billion USD target set by the two countries' senior leaders. The two sides agreed to closely coordinate to create a favorable corridor for trade and investment, striving to soon bring trade turnover to the 20 billion USD mark.
