Before the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism contributed 9.2% to the country's GDP. After the pandemic, we opened early but so far tourism has contributed less than 2% to GDP because revenue has dropped very low recently. This is an urgent economic issue and we need to find a solution to promote tourism development, contributing to economic recovery.
Mr. Do Xuan Quang - Deputy General Director of Vietjet speaking at the conference
Using Vietjet as an example, Mr. Quang said that previously, VJ had up to 85 flights per day to China, but in the past 2 years, it has stopped all of them. It has shifted to the Indian market but the highest capacity is only 17 flights per day.
"Recently, I had the opportunity to enter a developed country in Europe. They have two entrances, one requires a wait of more than 3 hours, while the other one allows visitors to go "fast" thanks to the application of visa and immigration technology. I tell this story to say that Vietnam needs to apply technology to visa issuance. Procedures and policies need to be one step ahead, but currently Vietnam is behind the needs and requirements of development reality" - Mr. Quang said and emphasized that Vietnam's immigration procedures are too slow, this is something that needs to be improved by automation. To develop tourism, it is necessary to solve the visa issue and especially extend the visa duration. Mr. Quang supports and agrees with previous delegates on visa exemption for visitors from countries such as the EU, Australia, and New Zealand.
Answering the question of why Indian tourists have not yet made up for Chinese tourists, Mr. Quang said that Indian tourists rarely come to Vietnam because in the past they often had to transfer to Bangkok (Thailand) which took an additional 3-4 hours. Vietjet also only has 3 direct flights to India.
"That's why direct flights play a key role and are a highlight in attracting tourists. In the near future, in addition to India, we will open direct flights to countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and countries in the former Soviet Union to attract more international tourists," said Mr. Quang.
Mr. Quang also suggested that in addition to visas and direct flights, what tourists need is tourism products. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, I feel like our tourism products have become less. Activities such as the Hue Festival or the Da Lat Flower Festival and many other festivals... and unique tourism products that attract many tourists need to be promoted.
