On April 10, Mr. Le Thanh Long - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province - said that recently 6 students had to be hospitalized due to inhaling gas from "stink balls" (also known as "stink bombs").
According to a report from the People's Committee of Tam Nong district, on the morning of April 8, after the flag salute, male students of grade 7 at Phu Ninh Secondary School played with a "rotten ball" and threw it back and forth, causing the ball to burst. Six female students inhaled the ball's rotten gas, causing difficulty breathing.
After being treated at the school's medical room, the children were taken to An Long Commune Health Station and then transferred to Tam Nong District Health Center. On the way, the children showed signs of difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting and were very frightened.
At Tam Nong District Medical Center, the children were examined, given IV fluids, and had their blood samples taken for testing. At 1:30 p.m. the same day, the children were transferred to the pediatrics department for further monitoring.
The students have now been discharged from the hospital and returned home.
Through investigation, the students said they bought "rotten balls" at the grocery store outside the school gate.
"The authorities have visited the hospital to visit the students, they are in good health. Phu Ninh commune police have gone to the school area to check, grasp the situation and handle it according to regulations," Mr. Long informed.
