On the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the Border Guard's Traditional Day (March 3, 1959 - March 3, 2025) and the 36th anniversary of the People's Border Guard Day (March 3, 1989 - March 3, 2025), Lieutenant General Le Duc Thai, Commander of the Border Guard, shared with the press about the process of building a streamlined and strong force.
Lieutenant General Le Duc Thai emphasized that building a streamlined, strong, and comprehensive Border Guard force under the motto "Exemplary and typical" is a key and urgent task in military, national defense, and border work in 2024 and the following years.
This is an important preparation step towards the goal that by 2030, the Border Guard force will develop in a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, and modern direction in the spirit of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress and Resolution No. 05 of the Politburo.
The Border Guard Command thoroughly grasps the viewpoint of building a streamlined and strong force, with a clear organization and structure, consistent with its functions and tasks. At the same time, it ensures balance and synchronization between organization, personnel, weapons, technical equipment and other security factors.
Dissolve 77 organizations, reduce 2,330 staff
Lieutenant General Le Duc Thai said that, so far, after the reorganization process, the Border Guard has adjusted and merged 226 organizations, of which 77 organizations have been dissolved. The streamlining of the apparatus has helped reduce 2,330 staff, rename and relocate 39 border posts, and establish the Northwest Training Center.
The Border Guard focuses on investing in building key forces in a modern direction in the spirit of Resolution No. 33 of the Politburo on the National Border Protection Strategy, including: Technical reconnaissance, Drug and Crime Prevention Task Force, and Border Control.
The merger and adjustment process was carried out synchronously, effectively, and in compliance with regulations and instructions from superiors. Relevant units have unified awareness, created high consensus from top to bottom, and enhanced determination to carry out tasks.
The Party Committee and the Border Guard Command have reported and proposed to the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army to adjust the organization, staffing, functions, tasks, as well as the area and location of border posts and stations according to the detailed planning of Project KTS-23 dated September 18, 2024.
At the same time, implement the decision of the General Staff on establishing 3 Border control stations and report on proposals to upgrade and reorganize 4 Border posts.

Besides, Lieutenant General Le Duc Thai also informed about the results achieved by the Border Guard in 2024.
Outstanding in the work is the research, grasp, assessment and forecast of the situation, proactively reporting to the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense to advise the Party and State on policies and measures to effectively handle situations on the border, sea and islands, avoiding being passive and surprised.
The entire force strictly maintains combat readiness, closely monitors the situation from early on and from afar, ensures political security, social order and safety, and maintains the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Fatherland.
The units have successfully cracked down on many projects and cases related to national security, preventing organizations and drug trafficking and transportation rings, smuggling, trade fraud, human trafficking and illegal immigration.
Notably, the force has dismantled 119 projects, of which it presided over 108 projects, coordinated the fight against 11 projects; arrested 7,283 cases with 14,985 subjects.
In the field of drug prevention alone, units handled 1,026 cases, arrested 1,384 subjects, and seized 2,115 tons of various drugs.
Promote administrative reform, actively apply technology and digital transformation in immigration and exit control at border gates managed by the Ministry of National Defense.

Border foreign affairs have been proactively and effectively implemented with many innovations, typically the 8th Vietnam - China Border Defense Friendship Exchange, the 2nd Vietnam - Laos Border Defense Friendship Exchange, and the Vietnam - Laos and Vietnam - Cambodia Young Border Officer Exchanges.
At the same time, activities to celebrate the Vietnam - Laos and Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Years were also successfully organized, contributing to strengthening cooperation and consolidating friendly relations between the countries.
In addition to the task of protecting the border, the Border Guard also actively implements programs to support people in eliminating hunger, reducing poverty, and building a strong grassroots political system.
Many meaningful models have been effectively implemented, typically such as Spring Border Guard warms the hearts of the villagers, Stepping up children to school - Adopted children of the border guard station, Green-uniformed military doctors, Green-uniformed military teachers...
The force also actively participated in the work of preventing and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, especially during storm No. 3, handling 671 cases, rescuing 793 people and 126 vehicles in distress.
