In an announcement on January 15, the Nauru government said it considered Taiwan "an inseparable part of China's territory" and would cut all ties with Taiwan on the same day, according to Reuters.
The island nation of Nauru, which has just announced it is cutting ties with Taiwan.

Nauru said it was in the best interests of the state and its people to seek the restoration of full diplomatic relations with China. "This change is in no way intended to affect our existing warm relations with other countries. Nauru remains a sovereign and independent state and seeks to maintain friendly relations with other countries," the Nauruan government stressed.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing appreciation and welcoming the Nauruan government's decision, and affirmed its readiness to open a new chapter in bilateral relations with Nauru on the basis of the "One China" principle.
In a statement shortly afterwards, Mr. Tien Chung Quang, Deputy Director of Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Taiwan would sever ties with Nauru with immediate effect to protect its honor.
The move comes after Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections over the weekend, in which Lai Ching-teh was elected president but his ruling Democratic Progressive Party lost its majority in the legislature after eight years.
Nauru is one of the world's smallest countries with a population of just 12,500. Honduras was the last country to cut ties with Taiwan in March 2023.
