Thanh Hoa has one more National Park

(NLDO)- With the upgrading of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, Thanh Hoa province now has 2 National Parks.


Mr. Le Duc Giang, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, has just signed a decision approving the conversion of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve (located in Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) into Xuan Lien National Park.

After being upgraded, Xuan Lien National Park will have the following functions and tasks: Protecting the integrity of forest ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, biological genetic resources, environmental education, scientific research, environmental protection; maintaining and ensuring stable water sources for Cua Dat Lake, associated with developing ecotourism and providing forest environmental services; contributing to improving the lives of people in the buffer zone, promoting socio-economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the area.

Conserve and develop the biodiversity values ​​of typical forest ecosystems, rare, precious, endemic, and priority species of forest animals and plants currently existing in the region; protect intact natural forest areas; protect and regenerate forests; enrich natural forests; sow and propagate indigenous, endemic, precious, and rare tree species and increase forest cover associated with sustainable biological resource development.

Strengthening the functions of watershed protection, environmental protection, regulating water resources for irrigation and hydropower projects of Cua Dat Lake; minimizing erosion and flooding, protecting the ecological environment, providing stable water sources for production and life in downstream areas.

Strengthening the functions of scientific research, propaganda, education, training, raising awareness of the community and stakeholders on environmental protection, biodiversity conservation...

Xuan Lien National Park has a total area of ​​25,601.98 ha, of which special-use forest land is 23,816.23 ha (including: Strictly protected area of ​​10,869.18 ha, ecological restoration area of ​​10,393.38 ha and service - administrative area of ​​2,553.67 ha); production forest land is 912.37 ha and semi-flooded land of Cua Dat lake is 873.38 ha.

Xuan Lien National Park is located on the administrative territory of 5 communes and towns: Bat Mot commune, Yen Nhan commune, Luong Son commune, Van Xuan commune and Thuong Xuan town in Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province.

Xuan Lien is considered one of the National Parks with valuable biodiversity reserves in Vietnam. According to the survey results, Xuan Lien currently has over 1,228 species of higher plants; 1,811 species of wild animals belonging to 241 families, 46 orders, 4 classes. There are 56 rare and endangered plant species identified, of which 35 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book (2007)...

Notably, Xuan Lien is the concentrated distribution area of ​​two species of po mu and sa ma trees with very large diameters, including two "old trees" that were awarded the title of heritage trees by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, which are the sa mu and po mu trees, determined to be over 1,000 years old.

In particular, Xuan Lien National Park is also home to the largest population of white-cheeked gibbons in Vietnam, with at least 64 groups, with 182 individuals, compared to 41 groups, 129 individuals 10 years ago; over 200 gray langurs, scientifically confirming the existence of the "Roosevelt's Mang" or "Lao Mang" species, which was considered extinct for nearly 100 years.

With the upgrading of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, Thanh Hoa now has two National Parks: Ben En National Park and Xuan Lien National Park.
