Vietnam has abundant biomass energy resources from agricultural and wood processing activities. With high rice and crop production, biomass from straw, bagasse and other crops can provide a significant source of energy.

Biomass energy is energy generated from organic materials (biomass) such as crops, agricultural waste, organic waste and household waste such as garbage, sludge, etc. This is currently considered a very important renewable resource on Earth.
According to data from the Vietnam Energy Association, the potential for biomass energy production from firewood in our country can reach 14.6 million tons of oil equivalent by 2030; agricultural waste can reach 20.6 million tons of oil equivalent by 2030; from urban waste can reach about 1.5 million tons of oil equivalent by 2030. In the whole country, the Mekong Delta is the region with the largest potential for developing this energy industry, accounting for 33.4%; followed by the North Central and Central Coast with 21.8%.
Previously, biomass energy sources in Vietnam were only exploited on a small scale, mainly for lighting and cooking in households. However, more and more businesses are interested in utilizing waste biomass in the production process to produce electricity, meeting energy needs.

In March 2024, at Long Binh An Industrial Park, Tuyen Quang Provincial People's Committee coordinated with Erex Joint Stock Company (Japan) to organize the Groundbreaking Ceremony of Erex Sakura Tuyen Quang Biomass Fuel Plant Project. The project is invested on an area of 3.3 hectares with a total investment of over 478.8 billion VND (equivalent to more than 20.4 million USD) with the aim of producing biomass pellets and wood chips, with a designed capacity of producing 150,000 tons of biomass pellets/year and 150,000 tons of wood chips/year.
According to the plan, the factory is expected to operate in 2025 and high-quality pellet products are widely used in many fields such as: fuel for thermal power plants, fuel for fireplaces, industrial incineration equipment, steam systems, drying livestock food...
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Honna Hitoshi - Chairman and General Director of Erex Joint Stock Company emphasized that thanks to the support of Tuyen Quang province, the project was quickly granted an investment certificate and the company was able to smoothly implement the project.
The groundbreaking of the wood pellet plant contributes to realizing Vietnam's net emission reduction policy, providing stable electricity, meeting the economic development needs of Tuyen Quang province in particular and Vietnam in general.

Accordingly, CP Vietnam uses energy efficiently such as: Increasing the rate of using renewable energy including: biomass energy, biogas energy, solar energy; applying innovative technology in the production process and circular economy principles to contribute to promoting green and sustainable development. Up to now, in business activities, energy accounts for 38% of the energy used by enterprises.
It can be seen that the use of biomass gasification technology in agricultural and forestry product processing not only helps businesses and the economy save costs and be cost-effective, providing energy solutions, but also contributes to increasing product quality, bringing economic and environmental efficiency.
However, the widespread application of biomass energy equipment models in production and business activities in Vietnam is still modest and small-scale. The root cause of this problem is that there is no biomass technology model suitable for the financial capacity and technological infrastructure of localities. On the other hand, there is a lack of support systems to deploy the model, for example, there is still no system to purchase biomass materials which are scattered...
This requires the role of the State in creating a suitable policy environment, applying biomass energy technology, thereby expanding the number of businesses using this technology.
