Of which, Lao Cai and Ninh Binh are trading at 62,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the region. At the same time, live pigs in Hanoi and Phu Tho are priced at 64,000 VND/kg, the highest in the country. The remaining localities in the region are purchasing from 62,000 - 63,000 VND/kg.

*Pig price in the Central Highlands region

Pig prices in the Central Highlands provinces were also quiet this morning.

Currently, live pigs in this area are being bought and sold at a difference of 60,000 - 62,000 VND/kg, with the price of 62,000 VND/kg appearing in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Lam Dong.

*Pig price in the Southern region

The Southern region slightly adjusted the price up in Ben Tre and Soc Trang, both reaching 62,000 VND/kg, the same price as Long An and Dong Thap.

The latest survey shows that Southern traders are purchasing live pigs at around 60,000 - 63,000 VND/kg. Of which, 63,000 VND/kg is recorded in Can Tho and Ca Mau.

*According to customs, by the end of October this year, Vietnamese enterprises had spent nearly 1.38 billion USD to import meat and livestock by-products to meet domestic consumption demand. Compared to the same period last year, the import turnover of this group of products increased by 14.2%.

Imported products are mainly meat and edible by-products of poultry; fresh frozen buffalo meat; edible by-products of live pigs, buffaloes and cows; fresh chilled or frozen pork and beef...

Notably, in the third quarter, the import volume of fresh, chilled or frozen beef; meat and edible by-products of poultry; edible by-products of pigs, buffaloes, cows, etc. increased compared to the same period in 2023.

These products are imported mostly from India, USA, Russia, Poland, Australia, South Korea and Brazil.

Imported meat is much cheaper than domestic products. Many types of frozen pork and chicken are priced at half the price of domestic products, creating great attraction in the market.

Actual market surveys show that imported pork is priced at 52,000-62,000 VND per kg on some websites, while domestic pork ranges from 90,000 VND to 180,000 VND per kg.

The leader of the Dong Nai Livestock Association said that cheap imported meat flooding into Vietnam is putting great pressure on the domestic livestock industry. The African swine fever epidemic that has spread since the beginning of the year has reduced domestic meat supplies and made domestic meat prices less competitive. If not strictly controlled, cheap imports could continue to put pressure on the industry, undermining its recovery efforts after the pandemic.
