On March 3, immediately after news of secret negotiations to resume the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, the European Union (EU), Germany, Estonia and Poland immediately voiced their opposition.

Specifically, European Commission (EC) spokesperson for Climate Action and Energy Anna-Kaisa Itkonen emphasized that resuming the Nord Stream 2 project with US participation is not in the EU's interests because it does not help diversify the bloc's energy sources.
Meanwhile, the German Ministry of Economy also affirmed that it is not negotiating with Moscow about the supply of Russian gas through this pipeline.
The ministry's statement stressed that independence from Russian gas is of strategic importance to Germany in terms of security policy and that Berlin is sticking to this policy.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz also opposed the restoration of the pipeline, saying there were potential risks of resuming operations on the gas line.
Sharing the same view, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized that restarting gas exports via Nord Stream 2 is a step in the wrong direction for European energy security.
Previously, according to German media outlet ARD and newspaper Bild , US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy, Mr. Richard Grenell, made several secret trips to Switzerland - where Nord Stream AG is headquartered in Zug state - to participate in negotiations.
A possible deal would include Washington acting as a mediator.
According to Bild , it is reported that Nord Stream 2 could be refitted to transport "green" hydrogen from Finland to Germany.
Although the US is not directly involved, its investors are expected to play an important role in the project.
Meanwhile, British media reported that Nord Stream 2 CEO Matthias Warnig is said to be developing a plan to restart the project with backing from US investors.
