Binh Duong – one of the pioneering smart cities in Vietnam – is gradually promoting digital transformation in education with the consensus of a dedicated team of teachers.
Embracing technological trends, teachers here are constantly learning and applying advanced online platforms such as Khan Academy to teach and support students. From innovative teaching methods to closely monitoring learning outcomes, teachers in Binh Duong have been creating conditions for students to maximize their potential, while contributing to building a modern education system, in line with the development orientation of a smart city.
Teachers proactively apply technology in teaching and learning
The new school year 2024 - 2025 has begun, which is also the time when the Department of Education and Training of Binh Duong province promotes the application of the Khan Academy platform through the Khan Academy Vietnam (KAV) Open School model in learning management at schools in the province. Immediately, the teaching staff in Binh Duong quickly applied it in teaching. Currently, many schools in the province have become "bright spots" in innovating teaching and learning methods, opening up opportunities for students and teachers to explore new ways of learning. Notably, the initiative and enthusiasm of teachers are the key factors that contributed to the initial success of this model.
At Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted (Thu Dau Mot City), Ms. Phuong Trang, a Math teacher, shared that applying the KAV Open School model has provided her with more tools to support teaching and assessing students comprehensively. Every week, she assigns homework on Khan Academy, taking advantage of the platform's mastery point system to encourage students to complete assignments with high scores. "Lessons on Khan Academy are not only lively but also suitable for the classroom curriculum, helping students absorb them more easily. Mastery points also help students have more motivation to study when they see their progress through each lesson."
Tran Quoc Tuan Primary School (Ben Cat City) is one of the leading schools in applying information technology in teaching, in which the use of Khan Academy is focused on and closely monitored by the school's Board of Directors to ensure effective and practical implementation. In particular, teachers at the school are proactive in finding initiatives to optimize students' learning efficiency. Ms. Tran Thi Kim Them, teacher in charge of IT, said that teachers realize that accompanying students to "master" learning on the platform brings the best learning efficiency. Therefore, the school actively guides and encourages students to proactively study and review many types of questions and exercises to achieve mastery and eliminate knowledge gaps. Sharing the same opinion with Ms. Them, Ms. Tran Thi Hang, homeroom teacher of class 5/5 at Tran Quoc Tuan Primary School, also shared that the school has innovated teaching and learning methods by combining students with doing exercises directly on the Khan Academy platform during class time, thereby helping them get familiar with the interface and how to use it so that they can easily access the platform at home and make efforts to study to achieve mastery. At the same time, to encourage and motivate students, she rewards learning tools (pens, notebooks, books) to those who achieve high scores, turning the learning process into an exciting journey. Thanks to that, students gradually form the habit of being self-disciplined and love learning more.

At Luong The Vinh Primary School (Ben Cat City), Mr. Ngo Huu Nghiep also said that the school's Board of Directors has actively directed the implementation of KAV for all students in the school. With the determination to bring the optimal learning experience, each student is given a KAV account by the teacher to practice knowledge every week. Mr. Nghiep emphasized: "The school regularly monitors the learning results and assignment progress of each class, the Board of Directors also directly checks the learning activities of each class to ensure that students are using Khan Academy effectively. In addition, we also introduce the platform to parents so that parents can rest assured and encourage their children to participate."
The first "sweet fruits" of teachers are to arouse the spirit of self-study for each student.
The initiative in approaching the model of combining online learning and assessing learning outcomes through the Khan Academy platform has brought many positive changes to both teachers and students in Binh Duong. Teachers all said that the platform has created conditions for students to review knowledge anytime, anywhere, without being limited by classroom space. This is especially important when many students need to review difficult knowledge or want to learn more about the lecture.
Teachers say that thanks to Khan Academy, students have an additional visual learning tool that helps them understand lessons more deeply. The diverse system of lectures and exercises helps students practice at many levels, from basic to advanced. “Even weak students can start with simple exercises, while good students can learn more extensive knowledge,” Ms. Hang shared. Every week, teachers count the rate of homework completion on the platform and see that students' interest is increasing. In particular, she added: “Initially, some parents were worried about online learning because they could not control their children's study time. However, after seeing their children progress and become more self-disciplined, parents gradually felt secure and encouraged their children to study.”
The enthusiasm of the teaching staff has reaped "sweet fruits" from the students. |
The support from the school board, the enthusiasm of the teaching staff, and the support of parents have created great motivation for students to study. For many students, studying on Khan Academy is not only a new experience but also an opportunity to practice perseverance and initiative. Many students have made significant progress through each lesson and each chapter. After the "small successes" of confidently doing the exercises correctly and achieving the mastery crown, they have become bold enough to raise their hands to speak up in class. Perhaps for those who work as teachers, the "sweet fruit" is seeing students improve every day, become more enthusiastic in class and always strive to become better versions of themselves.
The KAV Open School model has brought a breath of fresh air to Binh Duong education, creating conditions for teachers to continue to explore and promote the ability to apply technology in teaching. With strong support from the school and the companionship of parents, this model promises to bring many successes in the future, helping students access knowledge more proactively and comprehensively.
