Singapore adopts technology to enhance maritime security and safety

Plans to expand the use of drones at the Port of Singapore, including coordinating equipment to assist in controlling toxic fumes and fire risks in the event of a chemical spill at sea.

Singapore's Minister of Transport Amy Khor said on March 25 that the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will test advanced drone technologies in 2025 to improve maritime safety.

Speaking at the Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference during Singapore Maritime Week, Ms Khor highlighted plans to expand the use of drones at the Port of Singapore, including the integration of these devices to assist in controlling toxic fumes and the risk of explosions in the event of chemical spills at sea.

The Maritime Drone Complex, deployed since 2021 as a test platform, will now be expanded to commercial services, including remote inspection and shore-to-ship delivery.

MPA plans to collaborate with the Republic of Singapore Polytechnic to train drone operators and share advanced operational methods to improve maritime safety and efficiency.

Digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing the way ports operate, ships are managed and maritime services are provided, Ms. Khor noted.

However, increased digital connectivity also poses cybersecurity challenges. To address this, Singapore is accelerating the adoption of global digital standards to ensure secure data exchange between ships, ports and shore-based service providers.

From April 1, Singapore will become the first port in the world to fully deploy digital refueling services.

Fuel suppliers are required to adopt this process and issue electronic receipts, which users can verify through a new centralized authentication system developed by MPA./.
