On March 26, YouTube announced that it would change the way it counts views on its Shorts video format to help creators better understand performance and trends over time. With the new mechanism, views on Shorts videos will be calculated based on the number of first plays or replays. The change will take effect from March 31.
Previously, views were counted after a video had been played for a certain amount of time. With this change, users believed that the actual number of views would be much higher.
YouTube said it made the change because many creators wanted more granular data to measure view counts. The video-sharing platform's new idea is to expand its audience reach, making it easier for more "channel owners" to build their content strategies and pitch their work to potential advertising partners.
With the new update, YouTube Shorts will link its metrics to TikTok and Instagram Reels, both of which track the number of times a video is played for the first time or replayed. YouTube notes that this will give creators a better understanding of how their short-form videos are performing across platforms.
Creators interested in native Shorts metrics can view them directly through an “advanced mode” in Analytics. This metric, called “view engagement,” will allow creators to track and analyze how many people continue to watch their Shorts.
Notably, YouTube notes that this change won't affect creators' earnings or how they qualify for the YouTube Partner Program, as both will continue to be based on engagement views rather than the new mechanism.
