On March 26, German magazine Der Spiegel reported that personal data belonging to US President Donald Trump's top security advisors could be accessed online, raising concerns about government security vulnerabilities.
Cell phone numbers, email addresses and even passwords of National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth can be found on commercial data search services and hacker data posted online.
In some cases, the leaked information included recent phone numbers and email addresses used for information on Instagram, LinkedIn, cloud storage service Dropbox, and user location-tracking apps.
In particular, Ms. Gabbard and Mr. Waltz's phone numbers are said to be linked to WhatsApp and Signal messaging accounts.
Der Spiegel said the leak of personal data online put President Trump's national security team at risk of having malware installed on their mobile devices.
The German magazine also said that it is even possible that foreign spies were closely following the recent leak of a secret chat group on Signal about the airstrike campaign in Yemen on March 15, causing a trio of US officials to face a crisis.
The incident occurred when Mr. Waltz accidentally added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic magazine to the conversation, after which the content of the exchange was published on March 26.
The three officials have yet to comment on the incident. Meanwhile, the US National Security Council said the accounts and passwords related to Mr. Waltz mentioned in the Der Spiegel article had been changed since 2019./.
