Tradition in the context of this article is understood as familiar ways of thinking about a musical genre, style or artist. But what does it mean to "break" tradition?
Show color changes, audience file also changes?
MV Bac Bling by Hoa Minzy released on March 1, has so far garnered more than 63 million views, still holding the top 1 trending position on YouTube Vietnam.
Besides many opinions praising the MV for combining tradition and modernity in a creative and youthful way, some people think it "destroys" quan ho. Some arguments were given: it lacks the soul of quan ho, dancing in a spiritual place, the costumes are not standard, the music is not in line with the quan ho region...
Meanwhile, the CAM Gala in recent seasons has also been accused of "changing color" and "degenerating" when it allowed indie artists to perform on symphonic music with an orchestra of dozens of people.
The organizers also shocked some loyal audiences when they announced the list of artists participating in the show. This year's CAM Gala (taking place on April 26 in Hanoi and May 10 in Ho Chi Minh City) includes Duy Manh and Dangrangto.
"If Duy Manh sang "Love you is the ocean", "Come back here by my side", "Life of gambling" ... on a symphonic background, I wouldn't know what it would be like" is a comment from an audience member.
Or the show Nearest Dreamy Cities was also said to have "changed blood", the "audience" also changed completely, like " Anh trai say hi mini"...
MV Bac Bling
Previously, when answering Tuoi Tre , Tuan Cry shared that he is not a conservationist or a researcher, he is just a young Gen Z person who sees his homeland is so beautiful that he wants to write a song that incorporates some local cultural elements, mainly to inspire and evoke.
Through that, I invite everyone to Bac Ninh to play, learn about ancient Quan Ho, visit the scenic spots of Kinh Bac, eat Nem Bui and Banh Phu The. Bac Bling is not a Quan Ho song, so "saying that it "destroys" Quan Ho is a sin for the crew".
CAM Gala 2025 representative said that this year's event is part of the Classic and more project (CAM by 8 the Theatre) with the desire to bring high-quality art programs combining classical music and other popular music genres.

Even Tung Duong is less rough.
Of course, it is not until now that there has been a "conflict" in approaching and enjoying music. At first hearing, it seems that the two trends of tradition and traditional innovation are contradictory, but in fact, they are not.
The two trends still exist in parallel, support each other, and both have a positive impact on the overall appearance of Vietnamese music.

The comeback of many music products combining traditional cultural materials with modern music in recent years shows that this is one of the right directions, receiving support from the general public.
There are even products that have created trends and gone viral not only domestically but also internationally.
Hoang Thuy Linh is a typical example. She is not a pioneer but clearly comes to Let Mi tell you, See love ..., with a mix of traditional and contemporary folk cultural materials, plus catchy melodies and updated trends that top trend and go viral on all forums.
At the same time, it also established this artist's position in V-pop.
MV Bac Bling is also an effective combination. The MV created a wave on social networks. The keyword "Bac Ninh" was searched for rapidly after this product. Hoa Minzy and Tuan Cry were awarded certificates of merit by the Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province.
Following the "trend", the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of this province also announced free tours in 2025, including many check-in locations in Bac Bling .
One of the keywords of Brother Overcoming a Thousand Challenges - one of the two hottest TV shows last year - was about traditional culture. The shows Trong Com, Dao Lieu ... went viral on all platforms thanks to capturing this trend.
Den Vau once renewed himself with the Dongvui harmony project.
Of course, not every combination is effective. But from an artist's perspective, everyone has a need to refresh the audience's "traditional" view of them, and everyone wants to be a "chameleon" artist in the public eye.
Like Den Vau, the artist's first album in his career is Dongvui harmony - recorded in a theater, including eight familiar hits. The rapper wants to experiment with the intersection of rap/hip-hop - a liberal, free music genre and symphony - a classical genre, rich in academic qualities.
After its release, Den's voice and music were criticized by some people when placed in that context; however, perhaps Den was the happiest person because he dared to do it, dared to go beyond his comfort zone.
Even Tung Duong has become less rough and edgy to expand his audience to young people - the main music consumers today. Last year, he collaborated with Tang Duy Tan to release Tai Sinh, which went viral on social media.

For show organizers/producers, who doesn't want to expand their audience? The line between underground/indie and mainstream is no longer so clear and I think separating the colors is also redundant work, as long as it's good music.
So at Cam Gala , Duy Manh sang "Love is the ocean" with symphonic music, which is not surprising.
In creativity, nothing is impossible! To say that in approaching and enjoying music today, there still needs to be openness and listening on both sides - the audience and the artist.
