Because, with my previous culinary experiences in Cho Lon area, there are few Chinese restaurants that sell for less than 30,000 VND, let alone the price at your restaurant. Why does the restaurant owner sell at this price, is it profitable?
Full seats
On a weekend morning, I woke up late and stopped by Dat’s family restaurant on Gia Phu Street (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) for breakfast. When I arrived, it was already past 9am. Surprisingly, there were a lot of customers, sitting at dozens of tables arranged in the restaurant. More than a dozen people, including 5 members of his family and the helpers, were working so hard that they couldn’t keep up.
Mr. Vy's restaurant was packed with customers.
In front of the restaurant, there are menu boards with prices for about 8 dishes here, only from 15,000 - 20,000 VND, which surprised me a bit. Perhaps, this is the first Chinese restaurant where I have eaten a portion of banh canh, nuoi, hu tieu, stewed duck noodles... at this price.
Ms. Thuc Anh (42 years old, living in District 10) with her husband and son are among the groups of customers sitting crowdedly at this restaurant. The customer said that she has known the restaurant for about 3 or 4 years now, every weekend she and her family come to eat as well as walk around and watch Saigon in the morning.
“It’s still crowded during the weekdays when I come, but it’s busiest on weekends. I’ve always loved eating at Chinese restaurants, they serve delicious food, but the prices are a bit higher than in other areas.
This restaurant is surprisingly exceptional, one portion costs only 20,000 VND. Believe it or not, I ate a bowl of duck noodles for 20,000 VND, I couldn't find it anywhere in Saigon," she commented.
The price list in front of the restaurant surprised many people. The restaurant is located at 79 Gia Phu.
However, what makes her and her family stick with this restaurant is not only the price, but also the taste. She said that her family has tried every dish at the restaurant and it is quite suitable for their taste. Among them, her favorites are the deer satay noodle soup and the beef stew noodle soup.
Next to her, Thuc Anh's husband commented that he liked the noodles the most, because the noodles were soft and chewy in the traditional style, as if they were handmade. He said that today there were more customers than the previous times they came, and they had waited 10 minutes but still had not received their food, but he still sympathized with the restaurant.
No price increase
The owner told me that his father and family have been running this restaurant for many years. The current restaurant is located in Mr. Dat's house.
“Luckily, my father had a friend who worked as a chef in a restaurant, and he passed on the recipes and cooking methods. At first, our restaurant only sold two dishes: noodles and beef stew. Gradually, we added more dishes to give customers more choices,” the Chinese owner, originally from Guangdong, recalled.
The reason his family chose to sell at this price is because they want to feed the working class. According to him, the appeal of the dishes at the restaurant is not only the price, but also the rich flavor, suitable for the majority of diners. Cooking with heart is the biggest secret to keeping customers coming back for so many years.
The shop is run by members of Mr. Dat's family.
A bowl of soft beef noodle soup costs 20,000 VND at the restaurant.
“To be honest, besides selling this restaurant, my family also opened a workshop and did many other businesses. Selling food and drinks is just a part of it. But the whole family, including my wife, me and our three children, have special feelings for the restaurant, which is also a job to help us pay for our daily groceries. Selling at this price doesn’t make much profit, but it’s fun, it’s called selling out of passion, out of love,” Dat’s father added with a smile.
Currently, while the prices of many ingredients are increasing, the restaurant owner still has no intention of increasing the prices of the dishes. He said that this price is suitable for both the restaurant and the customers. The restaurant makes enough profit to maintain, the customers have a satisfying breakfast. The family members also find joy in their work…
