PGA Tour breathes life into Maui's ashes

Hawaii The PGA Tour plans to raise millions of dollars to help local people rebuild their lives after the wildfire disaster when it hosts The Sentry 2024 from January 4-7 on the island of Maui.

The day before the tournament, the PGA Tour announced that its title sponsor would contribute more than $2 million to the Maui disaster relief fund. That tragedy occurred on August 8, 2023, and was sparked by a wildfire. It destroyed the entire resort town of Lahaina, killing more than 100 people and leaving more than 6,000 people living in temporary accommodation in the remaining hotels and apartments. The damage is estimated at $6 billion.

Over the past few days, several PGA Tour stars have taken the initiative to support their local communities. Patrick Cantlay has led a campaign to support children. Tony Finau has hosted a charity golf tournament, similar to Cantlay.

Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler will wear a cap with a large L embroidered on the front, a reference to the L that has been on the hill next to Lahainaluna High School since 1904. The cap is selling for $20 and is already sold out, with all proceeds going to the people of Maui.

Collin Morikawa, in addition to helping prepare the free lunch, also pledged to contribute his own money to the relief fund through the conversion of hole points at The Sentry. Accordingly, Morikawa donated $2,000 for each birdie, $4,000 for each eagle. After two rounds, he scored 12 birdies, one eagle. Morikawa applied this form, just three days after the tragedy occurred in his hometown.

"Maui has always held a special place in my heart. I used to play there when I visited my grandfather and his business. My relatives live there. Now the wildfires have destroyed everything. So I will donate $1,000 for every birdie I make in the last three FedEx Cup events to help the local people," Morikawa announced on August 11, 2023.

There have been concerns about the PGA Tour hosting The Sentry while Maui is still devastated and struggling to rebuild. But it’s a necessary event, according to Mark Rolfing, an NBC Sports host and Maui native. “This tournament means a lot to the community. This week’s images will reflect the chaos and call for more community support to help Maui get back to normal.”

The PGA Tour has chosen Maui to host The Sentry, a par-73 course at the Kapalua Golf Resort and Golf Club, since 1999. This year’s tournament will also kick off the 2024 season with a calendar year instead of the two-year split that has been the case for the past decade.
