Mr Trump is expected to receive his party’s formal nomination at the Republican National Convention, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday. The FBI said there were no known threats to the event, while the Secret Service said it was unlikely to make any changes to its security plans.

"I was going to postpone my trip to Wisconsin and the Republican National Convention for two days, but have just decided that I cannot let a 'shooter' or potential assassin change my schedule or anything else," Trump wrote on his Truth Social social network on Sunday.

The convention will feature televised speeches from rising Republican politicians and Mr Trump will announce his vice presidential running mate, while also highlighting the party's stance on topics such as abortion, immigration and the economy.

As known, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as a suspect in the attack on Mr. Trump and said the case is being investigated as an assassination.

The FBI said Sunday that the gunman acted alone. The agency said it has not yet determined the suspect’s ideology or any signs of mental health issues or found any threatening language on the suspect’s social media accounts.

Crooks is a registered Republican, according to voter records, but donated $15 to a Democratic political action committee when he was 17.

At the time of the assassination, he was employed as a nutrition assistant at Bethel Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

FBI officials said the gun — an AR-style 556 rifle — was purchased legally, but they believe it was purchased by the suspect's father.

Officials said a “suspicious device” was found in the suspect’s vehicle, which was examined by bomb technicians and rendered safe.

“There is no place for this kind of violence in America,” Mr Biden said at the White House after the incident. “I urge everyone, please, not to make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations.”

The attempted assassination of Mr Trump has upended the discussion around this year's US presidential campaign, which has focused on whether Mr Biden, 81, should drop out after a forgettable debate performance on June 27.
